Best AKG K245 Black Friday – The K245 is the open representative in AKG’s new “zero five” series, which currently starts with the K175 (for testing) and ends with the K275 (for testing). All headphones in this series are expressly recommended for studio work, whereby the open version for long production and listening sessions, which is to be tested here, should be particularly suitable since the notorious “hot ears” do not appear so quickly due to the open airflow behind the membrane.

Like its two brothers, the K245 also wants to be a handset that you always have with you. For this purpose, it is equipped with folding joints that have been registered for a patent. In general, the K245 is a movement-loving guy, because the ear cups can be rotated by 180 degrees in the vertical axis. The listener is also technically motivated to start, because a frequency response that ranges from 15 Hz to 25 kHz, 50 mm drivers that are content with a slim 32 Ohm, and a sound pressure level of 109 dB per volt are absolutely competitive.
Like all models in the series, the K245 is as elegant as it is serious: all components are black. The type designation and AKG logo are in subtle white and silver. The air-permeable back wall is made of finely perforated metal and looks as technical as it is high-quality – very chic. The headband construction, in which the headband is slid over two straps, but the frame remains static, has proven to be extremely easy to carry and, in conjunction with the open design, enables pleasant work even over long periods. The professional appearance is also underlined by the interchangeable spiral cable, which is equipped with a mini XLR connector on the headphone side and a mini jack (including adapter) on the output side. In the future, the ear pads will also be exchangeable.
With the K245 coming here for the test, I have now heard all three models in the Zero Five series and would like to subsume that the engineers have basically worked well, but that the “fighting spirit” ran out on the last tonal mile. The K245 shows this as an example: On the plus side, the broad frequency response can be booked with a solid bass image. The listener is also not lacking in terms of sound level and clipping resistance.
Nevertheless, the sound is relatively compact. To put it positively, you could also call it neutral and effortless. Long listening sessions are perfectly clear. Personally, however, I also lack agility and presence in the high frequency range – especially in direct comparison with my reference earphones from Beyerdynamic, Phonon and Adam Audio. And inevitably less altitude means a somewhat narrower stereo stage (clearly, because the spatial information is largely received by the ear from the high frequencies). Somehow you want a little more excitement, shine and performance in the top end when listening.
