From a technical point of view, the K361 does not need to hide from its big brother, because it too starts with drivers that are 50 millimeters in size and coated with titanium, whose voice coils are made of OFC – oxygen-free copper. This gives the listeners a sensitivity of 114 dB (manufacturer’s information) per supplied volt and a transmission range from 15 Hz to 28 kHz with an average impedance of 34.05 ohms.
Differences
The main difference between the K371 and the K361 is that in the former the frequency response was approximated to a reference curve developed by Harman – at least that is what the advertising text says. In addition, the additional spiral connection cable of the 371saved only comes with two straight 3 and 1.2-meter cables. I would rather have seen it if a spiral cable had been included instead of the 1.2-meter cable. Because in-studio operation, where performers in front of the microphone or engineers behind the mixer move a lot and often, the winding cable type is an advantage because it is able to compensate for such firmaments. The difference is even greater with regard to the built-in connector: While the 371 is a commercially available mini XLR socket, the 361 is a proprietary bayonet twist lock.
Outward appearances
On the outside, the K371 and K361 look identical except for tiny details in the color scheme. And with that, the K361 is pretty representative of its kind, because everything about it is rounded and together with the plastic used here, which has a matt black look, it would not look out of place as a voice radio system onboard a camouflage bomber. The loudspeaker gondolas can be folded in on both sides so that the listener can be stored in the included carrying bag. Musicians and DJs who like to have an ear free when performing will also appreciate this. At just 221 grams (without cables), the handset is quite light in the class of circumaural headphones.
Comfort
Accordingly, the K361 can also be worn without problems for a long time without pressing or becoming “heavy”. Of course, you only have to take into account the heat build-up below the ear padding. In return, you get a relatively good outside noise shielding, which is necessary for both recordings and concentrated listening.
Sound
I liked the K371the neutral, somewhat low-pitched, and therefore unstrained, “edge-free” sound; as I called it at the time, goes pretty well for me Eulberg, “Manifold”) on my reference receiver Phonon SMB-02 clearly more spatial information; and pearls much more delicately to the ear than with the K361.
The AKG, on the other hand, develops considerably more energy in the bass: it is really nice and dry and crisp. Together with the powerful mids, which are a bit too “bulbous” in the area around 600 Hz; this gives the listener a very compact, “punchy” sound signature – not “open; but “in your face”, which of course is special is a lot of fun with electronic club music. Whoever has a finely resolved Airy fireworks preferred, will not appreciate the K361. On the other hand, fans of a compact, dry sound might like it.
