Apple AirPods Pro Black Friday & Cyber Monday Review
Everything is different – everything new
The main difference to the normal AirPods (to the test) is the obvious first: the design. Because while these are not in the ear canal as EarBuds, in front of them, they generally fit quite a lot of people; but at least as many are anything but perfect. This not only narrows the customer base, due to the design; they can also rarely exploit their full sonic potential – a loose fit primarily messes up a clean reproduction in the bass area, and too many noises from the outside move into the ear canal. The seat of the old AirPods (and all headphones with the so-called EarBuds design) can also be described as “airy”; which severely limits or even makes it impossible to use them during sports or other activities that require a lot of movement.
In-ears are the far better choice: lowering the drivers in the ear canal can lead to pressure problems; and the often-cited diving bell effect for some, but when choosing the right earplug size; in-ears sit just enough in the ear canal, which positively affects the sound and fit.
A word about the seat: Apple’s in-house silicone plugs already have good passive shielding and did not squeeze noticeably throughout the test. Violent movements also don’t matter – problem solved Apple!
Another annoying problem that all headphone manufacturers have to deal with has also been solved: step reverberation, which results from headphones sealing so strongly that the pressure in the ear that arises acknowledges the occurrence of our steps as a dull echo. Fortunately, this is not the case with the AirPods Pro, because special ventilation ensures the necessary pressure equalization. The same applies here: thumbs up.
As with the old AirPods, the furnishings here are as elegant as Apple is used to: open the charging case, and a beautifully animated pop-up guides us through the necessary steps. All of this takes just a few seconds and the new pros are ready to use.
As an Android user, on the other hand, this is not possible, because logically, the manufacturer can dovetail his devices so closely on the software side that this user experience is reserved exclusively for Apple customers. In the case of non-Apple devices, the Bluetooth settings of the smartphone must then be opened and Apple’s charging case made to pair with the pairing button on the back. Along with the alien smartphone operating system, however, there are missing functions such as reassigning the push buttons, automatic ear detection, or testing whether the AirPods are properly seated in the ear.
If the AirPods Pro are then paired, you will notice: They do not support a Bluetooth multipoint, i.e. they do not support a simultaneous connection to two devices, in order to be able to switch from listening to music (e.g. on the iPad) to a call on the iPhone without interruption. Switching is generally possible since the AirPods are automatically registered to all devices with the same Apple ID, but this must always be done manually.
In terms of control, the manufacturer has also decided to change it; because now there are no longer two touch-sensitive surfaces, but an elongated pressure sensor, which can be found in the short stems. In the Bluetooth system settings, you can then configure these two sensors somewhat. “Something” because, similar to the normal AirPods, we do not go far enough.
By default, the two pressure sensors on the left and right are assigned the same: Holding down causes a switch from ANC to transparency mode or, on one side, calls up Apple’s Siri voice assistant. A short press starts or pauses the music, two presses lets you jump forward a track and a triple press causes the songs to jump back. So far so good,
Speaking of catching up: Although Apple has already updated the firmware with the 2B584 (Settings → General → Info → AirPods Pro); we saw a red exclamation mark next to the right earplug shortly; after the initial setup of the headphones when we opened the charging case wanted to query the battery status. We could rule out that the contact pins were dirty or something similar, and even a complete reset did not help. However, the problem disappeared after a while. So it seems to be a bug in the software that fortunately had no further effects.
And the renaming of the AirPods has not worked so far. Apple should quickly post an update here because such bugs diminish the joy.
Means of communication
The AirPods Pro cut a good figure when talking on the phone: both sides hear each other clearly and clearly without any significant loss. However, there were occasional and non-reproducible noises during our test if the pressure sensors were activated during the call. In terms of FaceTime and Skype (both on iOS), the pros always worked flawlessly.
What applies to the old AirPods also applies here: If you only want to listen to Mother-in-Law’s recipe babble with one ear; you can do that too, because if one earpiece moves into the cozy charging case, the other continues to function.
Stupid, by the way, only if you don’t want to or can’t update your macOS to Catalina; because then it will be difficult to use the in-ears on the Mac. AirPods Pro is recognized under Mojave (version 10.14.6), the operating system also connects to them; but the listeners remain silent, except for Skype, where the sound quality can be described as “rather modest”. Here it would have been nice to be able to at least be happy about an error message …
But true wireless headphones are made for being there any time, anywhere, even on a bike. And it should be said to all bikers that wind noise and cap noise suppresses the Pro model really well, but only when ANC is active. In transparency mode, all of this is then logically amplified accordingly.
