Scope of delivery-rich
Audezes in-ears delivered in a lavishly processed storage box, in which a transparent presentation panel is revealed in an artfully coated cardboard sleeve. The scope of delivery consisting of in-ears and carrying bags is well protected. The latter turns out to be softly outfitted, made of black genuine leather and hard-wearing nylon.
The LCDi3 comes with four different cables: In addition to an audio cable with a mini jack, a cable with a Lightning connector is also included; a cable with a Bluetooth transmitter including a remote and a USB charging cable are also at the start. Exchangeable ear hooks in four different sizes and rubber pads in six different sizes ensure an optimal fit. So-called “ear fins” as well as a cleaning stick and a cable clip are also included.
In addition to the Quickstart Guide and a small manual for the Bluetooth unit in print form, there are two check cards, one of which contains the associated download links. The other card offers guarantee information that gives the impression of real manual work. This is because it contains not only the individual serial number of the in-ear pair but also the signature of the employee who carried out the final inspection before the device was delivered. Hats off!
Design and seat
The processing of the headphones is flawless, but their design seems a little out of time to me. But that’s a matter of taste. The admittedly HUGE-looking in-ears have an ergonomically shaped, permanently installed hearing extension, which can be inserted far into the ear canal together with the attached pads. Once the right ear hooks have been found and attached and their position has only been optimized, the “giant babies” are surprisingly secure for their size and do not slip out even with moderate head movements. This makes them absolutely suitable for everyday use. The good fit also comes from the fact that the ear hooks are not made flat, but nestle behind the ear towards the head. Only the new ear fins don’t really want to hold the ear cup for me as a tester.
Technology details
The LCDi3 form the bridge between Audeze’s entry-level in-ears iSine and the high-end models of the LCD-4 series. This becomes clear in their design as well as in technology and equipment. Compared to the iSine headphones, the LCDi3 should offer a much finer resolution. Their cast magnesium cases are light and resistant at the same time. The large back of the in-ears is half-open with its grill with an underlying metal grill. This should make deeper and more transparent bass possible.
The headphones have a low impedance of only 20 ohms and, with their patented design, are intended to ensure distortion-free reproduction even at high volumes. A big argument in the truest sense of the word is provided by the built-in drivers, 30-millimeter pressure transducers that work planar-magnetic and use strong neodymium magnets. And the audio transmission range specified by the manufacturer actually ranges from 10 Hz up to a dizzying 50 kHz.
The Bluetooth unit is the CIPHER module that is also installed on other Audeze headphones, whose low-latency in-house DSP works with 24-bit converters and Bluetooth 5.0 support. The sound quality of the wireless transmission is technically at the highest level due to aptX and aptX HD codecs.
Sound worlds
The first time you notice that the sound of the LCDi3 is characterized by distinctive mids. Speech and vocal signals are very easy to understand, without the playback tending to hiss. Overall, the middle area seems very differentiated to me. Numerous details become audible here, which other in-ears conceal or blur. The very open highs of the headphones also contribute to the high subjective signal resolution. They convey transparency and openness down to the super-high range. Both the stereo stage and the excellent depth of these Audezes benefit from this. The sound never appears high-pitched or even sharp. In good German: If you listen to the latest pop music with these headphones, you get a lot of steam from the kick drum of the drums. Basses from hip-hop and urban music are also no problem for the LCDi3. They are still implemented without distortion even at a relatively high playback volume. Due to their low ohm count, these in-ears are definitely among the “louder” representatives, which can also be fed with audio by poorly performing preamps. As expected with this construction (semi-open), neither the attenuation of external noise nor the acoustic isolation from the outside is too pronounced with this model. What I particularly like about the LCDi3 is that it has no problems with musical genres.
Liaison
With the enclosed Lightning cable, the LCDi3 is immediately ready for use on iOS devices. An integrated remote control enables volume control, pause/play, and call acceptance. The Bluetooth cable also has a built-in remote. Fortunately, there is hardly any difference in sound in Bluetooth mode. It is striking that the playback volume when using the Lightning cable is significantly higher than when the headphones are fed via the other connection types.
