Occur
First of all, Mobius a robustly processed closed over-ear headphone with internal electronics. Externally, the model, available in two colors, makes a high-quality impression. In terms of design, the test device clearly addresses the player, which reflected, for example, by the flexible (removable) bracket microphone. Noble surface materials that are known from the hi-fi world are dispensed with here. The scope of delivery includes the necessary connection cables, while a carrying case and stand are optionally available.
Handling
The Mobius can operate in different ways. The electronics perform their full range of functions in USB mode as an audio interface. Surround signals up to 7.1 can be fed into the headphones and converted into a room simulation including head tracking. To this end, the company cooperated with the Israeli manufacturer Waves, a market leader in the field of studio technology. The NX technology used simulates the impression of a more spacious loudspeaker reproduction via headphones. The manufacturer not only limits itself to the two-channel stereo level, but can also simulate surround and even use the Ambisonics B format for three-dimensional sound reproduction.
SBC, AAC, and the high-resolution LDAC codec can be used via Bluetooth. Head tracking, speaker simulation, and microphone use can also use here, but you limited to two-channel audio playback. The same applies to the analog connection of the headphones.
Much of the extensive functionality is controlled via controls on the left earphone. Here you will find the on and off switch, which is also used for reliable pairing, handling calls in Bluetooth mode and for start and stop commands when playing music. A second switch activates or deactivates the pleasantly clean and clear-sounding microphone, while another control adjusts its volume – useful in gaming. Another button configures the 3D sound playback, which on the one hand allows manual centering or automatic tracking of head movements, but can also be switched off for pure music enjoyment. There is also a volume control. This, but also the microphone controller have push functions, so that you can also jump between tracks and choose from seven equalizer presets. You can also switch between the modes “2 Channel”, “7.1” and “HiRes”.
Practice
The wearing comfort is high thanks to synthetic leather upholstery of the rotating ear cups and the length-adjustable headband, while at the same time providing good passive noise insulation. You can wear the Mobius for a long time without disturbing or pressing. The pressure on the ears is also large enough to prevent the headphones from slipping. The ear pads are also interchangeable.
A charged battery is generally required, whereby the headphones are powered (and charged) via the computer in USB mode. The running time is around ten hours with the 3D function active, the charging time around three hours.
The general operation takes getting used to and a bit fiddly due to the higher number of controls and functions. In the future, I would like to see more ease of use in the form of a smartphone app, which is well known from other Audeze products.
I also have some technical comments: So it bothers me that the Mobius does not remember the status of the 3D simulation. If you want to use the headphones for pure music playback, you must always switch off the simulation with accompanying head tracking in Bluetooth mode. There were irritations in USB mode when switching from surround sound to two-channel mode, in which the sound was initially not properly routed to the headphones. Finally, I initially had sound problems with the 3D simulations with multi-channel USB film playback. This may have to do with the settings and the respective codecs, for which the operating instructions do not necessarily provide real information. In the further course of the test, however, there were no further inconsistencies to report.
Sound
First of all, the Mobius is a pair of headphones that can really steam and sound excellent. It delivers a full level with good noise insulation to the outside.
With magnetostatic constructions, magnetic material is applied directly to the membrane. This can be moved directly in a field with static magnets in front and behind. Appropriate constructions are characterized by differentiated dynamics and high transparency. And that also applies to the Mobius!
Here, the manufacturer brings its years of experience in this area, which results in a remarkably high sound quality in music playback, for the evaluation of which I deactivated the 3D mode.
The Mobius sounds clean, deep and tight in the bass, open and rich in details and airy in the heights as well as balanced, warm and harmonious in the middle. To do this, it responds quickly to transients and thus provides a precise, wide panorama and good spatial representation. At this point I would also like to mention the good dynamics and the generally balanced coordination. In the bass range, the headphones are not too thick despite the amazing low bass reproduction; while avoiding hardness in the high range. As a result, a real hit is offered in this price range, which also ensures listening pleasure in addition to the analytical component of sound reproduction. The Mobius is therefore recommended across genres for the use of music from orchestral recordings to jazz to rock and current club genres.
Three-dimensional sound reproduction
Of course, the focus is on the Mobius’ ability to simulate 3D sounds; especially via USB due to the multi-channel sound processing that is possible here. In fact, with corresponding films and trailers; there is an impressive spatial sound experience that draws the listener fully into the action. The Mobius is a really good choice for enjoying films on the computer; even if switching between the 3D and surround modes sometimes results in level changes.
Gaming experience
The gaming sector is even more relevant – the actual target group of Mobius. With the appropriate game tone, a wonderfully spatial sound image is also achieved here. And this is where head tracking comes in: it works with six axes and follows the head movements precisely and, above all, rapidly. In the virtual reality area, this is an outstanding feature; and especially in combination with VR glasses at games or in simulations is an almost unrivaled specialty.
As expected, the Mobius does well in gaming. No matter whether shooter, platforming, or racing game – everything sounds excellent. As suspected, head tracking on the screen is only of limited use. In some situations, it may be helpful to acoustically determine the position of opponents before visual contact; but in principle, you are looking towards the monitor because the visual focus is clearly on the screen.
Head tracking visualized in real-time using the free control software Audeze HQ for Windows and macOS. For this purpose, the EQ profiles can also select here and the 3D simulation (HRTF – Head-Related Transfer Function) can be adjusted in several parameters; which, at least for me, had only a relatively minor impact. The head tracking visualized in real-time in the “Audeze HQ” software. And the EQ profiles can also select here.
Note:
The direct operability on the headphones, on the other hand, makes it easier to find the right sound profile without the annoying switch between game and software. The presets differ subtly and are basically all suitable for playing. You cannot create and save your own EQ presets, so you limited to Audeze’s specifications. Thanks to the various cables provided, switching from PC to console is no problem, and the headset surprises here.
As a console player, you are actually used to having to do without some features; as soon as the USB cable exchanged for the analog cable. With a brisk round of Mario Kart 8 on the switch; however, you immediately notice that head tracking also activated in this setup. Although you can argue about the meaning here; nevertheless it is not impractical to know which side the pursuer comes from behind. The cuddly Mario Kart Sounds reveal the position of the opponent in a good time to plan the next defense attack.
What finally stands out: No matter how and what the headphones connected to; there is always a slight hissing noise as soon as (silent) charging screens flicker across the screen. However, this is not perceptible in the game itself.
