The design is appealing, straightforward, elegant, and of high quality. The rotatable and foldable ear cups for space-saving accommodation in the wedge-shaped case supplied, as well as the length-adjustable spring steel bracket, padded with memory foam and covered with synthetic leather, which feels pleasantly soft and comfortable. This results in a comfortable and secure fit, even for longer listening sessions. At high temperatures, however, the ear begins to sweat.
The present Traveler version is completely black, while the technically identical Explorer version uses the color combination gray and brown. Technically, the Lagoon ANC scores with active noise canceling, touch functions for control, and sound personalization. The manufacturer’s runtime information is also impressive: 45 hours without and 24.5 hours with noise suppression. In fact, there was no need to recharge the handset during the longer test run. There are also no complaints regarding the Bluetooth connection: pairing is quick and the radio link is maintained over several rooms in an apartment. Pairing is possible with up to 15 devices, two of which can be operated simultaneously and mutually.
Practice
When it comes to operation, the Lagoon ANC uses a touch field on the right ear cup and two switches with which the device can be switched on and off and the noise canceling can be switched on at two intensity levels. So you can find your way around quickly.
The level can control via the touch field, playback started/stopped, jumping between tracks, fast forwarding, and rewinding, calling up a voice assistant in the smartphone or computer, and answering/ending calls and brokering. All of this works reliably with little practice.
A nice extra is the LED interior lighting of the ear cups, which visualizes color-coded information about the device status, such as a low battery. If you put off the headphones, you can see from the fact that the lights go out that the Lagoon ANC automatically switches to standby mode.
Part of the operating concept is the free MIV app for Android and iOS. This contains online help for the handset functions, hearing statistics, the option of configuring the sensitivity of the touch-field and, above all, possible sound personalization (MOSAIC by Mimi Defined). A hearing profile is determined via the app by a series of test frequencies at different levels, which have to be confirmed by the user and supplemented by an age specification. The result is a correction curve that can be applied continuously to the sound output.
Noise-canceling
As a basis, the Lagoon ANC comes with medium passive damping. However, effective protection in the form of active noise suppression is switched on in a straight line using two-stage electronics, which also makes sense when the music playback is switched off. The attenuation primarily affects the bass range and thus effectively filters out low-frequency and static noises.
Especially in stationary situations, such as sitting on a train or plane, you actually create a secluded relaxation area. The second intensity level works quite efficiently without being disruptive. Due to the concept, damping works less efficiently when moving. In practice, however, I did not find wind noise a problem. Nevertheless, the competition is ahead: So noise-canceling goes hand in hand with a slight audible noise. The switchability in the two stages is not necessarily sensitive. And finally, I would have the option ofSony WH-1000XM3 (for the test) wanted to spontaneously communicate with the environment using the touch function.
Sound
If you are not in a quiet home environment, I recommend switching on the active noise suppression, despite a slight loss in transparency, because this way you will reward with a fundamentally better signal-to-noise ratio, which will intensify your musical life. In the bass range, the headphones are powerful with sufficient definition. At the same time, he can certainly identify older shots with less depth. Real deep bass is also understandable, as are deep tonalities and changing dynamics.
In the middle, voices are easy to understand, and acoustic instruments with convincing clarity. In addition to the character of the different instruments, nice proximity is conveyed depending on the recording. Only in the border area between bass and low mids do I find the tuning slightly overemphasized. You get a powerful sound in rock, pop, and EDM genres, but it also reveals the necessary dynamics in orchestral works.
At high frequencies, the Lagoon ANC draws a safe line between transparency and hardness. This results in good detailed information, with the help of which the contour of the instruments involved as well as the stereo stage and movements in the panorama can be easily understood. In terms of room depth, the closed dynamic driver system is expected to be in the middle of the field and cannot keep up with open cable-bound hi-fi specialists. Nevertheless, the Fazioli on Benny Andersson’s piano work reproduced with wonderful intimacy and spatial sound.
