B&O Play Beoplay H4 Black Friday 2023 Review
Oh how nice
The Danes have always paid homage to good taste with their products, and the B&O Play division for mobile listening pleasure puts on stylish over-ears with the H4 earphones, which are fundamentally convincing in terms of both color and shape. Material selection and processing are also of the finest quality. Lamb leather ear cushions, fabric on the inside of the stainless steel headband, the adjustment mechanism of which creates trust and allows the H4 to be adjusted comfortably, as well as rubberized aluminum shells convey a feeling of quality and value.
Full pack
The first defoliation is a feast for products like these. So we are happy when an original packaging device like a B&O Play passes our desks. After lifting the stable cardboard lid, the Beoplay H4 smiles towards you. The Charcoal Gray model assigned to us for test purposes rests on a blue molded part, which releases the depths of the box by pulling on two fabric bottles.
Two compartments in the floor house a USB charging cable (25 cm) plus a 1.2 meter audio cable with 3.5 mm plugs in one compartment and a small printed information booklet in the other hiding place. In addition to an explanation of the few control panels, it also indicates that the H4 likes to communicate with apps from Google’s PlayStore or its iOS counterpart. The latter, with an iPhone 6, corresponds to my test setup.
The Beoplay app offers the management of the entire B&O park (e.g. Bluetooth speaker). The H4 can be “personalized” by selecting the color / version, and presets can be created by the user to define different preferences and recall them at any time. The battery charge level is also announced via the app.
There is no EQ in the traditional sense, but a matrix with a point that can be moved into the areas Warm, Excited, Relaxed and Bright.
As a friend of audio devices of all kinds and a habitual person using them, I naturally prefer the most specific setting of the frequencies, but strongly support that B&O has chosen the consumer-friendly “variant simple” and uses the above-mentioned attributes in their app.
Sound
I admit: I had to feel my way around the sound. I am more of an analytical listener by profession, and I would have preferred to “remastered” what came to my ears depending on the material. The trend is clearly to hear “warm”, that is: well-being through bass emphasis. After walking through our Kopfhoerer.de Spotify test playlist, however, it became apparent that the H4 by no means applied everything dark with a broad stroke, but only carried the deep belly too proudly in explicit bass-emphasized pieces. In this case, I place the point in the middle of Relaxed and Bright on the matrix of the app, which also turned out to be my favorite setting.
The set-up was very good, the H4 showed hardly any weaknesses due to the genres. The high external attenuation allowed listening to quiet music passages even in a noisy environment. The dynamics were particularly convincing when it came to classical music; Solo passages of a violin concerto and a tutti left equally high sound impressions. Spatial depth and details were easy to locate. The H4 plays jazz, pop, but also the hardest rock in a disciplined manner. The mids feel comfortable like the bass foundation, highs do not bite and bite, but do show presence and shimmer clean and pure in the sound spectrum.
The B&O Play H4 is particularly well suited to retreat and just enjoy. The high external damping lets out ambient noise as far as possible – even without active noise canceling. Due to the high shielding, participation in road traffic is not recommended. If you want to strut an H4 on the Pracht-Boulevard, you should be aware of this.
And still …
Telephoning is easy with the B & Os, pairing with the Bluetooth donor works stress-free and safely, the applies between the player and headphones, but in addition to the sound setting, it does not allow much more than start / stop and title jumping. Which player played must explore via the player itself. The right handset has three easily accessible buttons for loud and quiet, skipping, accepting calls, and the H4 also supports Siri – Apple’s voice control. However, B&O does not offer gesture control via the outer surfaces.
The runtime is extremely long thanks to the 600 mAh lithium-ion battery with the specified 19 hours, and the mini jack connection means that the H4 can also be operated via cable. A friendly offer for long-haul pilots or mufflers. With 2.5 hours postulated, the best results are also achieved here.
