Bowers & Wilkins PI3 Black Friday Review
Ah …!
Generous handling of the packaging material presents the PI3 beautifully designed in all its splendor after pulling off the massive lid against a gentle vacuum suction resistance and all like this: “Ah!”
If you then take the pleasantly velvety silicone band in your hand, you immediately succumb to the appeal of the value that these PI3s exude: be it the metal pushbuttons on the control or the magnetic earplugs; which do not seem filigree, in the overall picture but insert well as sporty advertised in-ears. Furthermore, the box contains the usual selection of allowances, such as three pairs of earmolds as well as ear hooks; charging cables, and a storage bag with a snap lock. The rest is very representative foam.
Control & integration
Not included, but available in the usual stores, is the “Headphones” app; which I immediately install for my iOS device in order to be well prepared for the moment; when I switch on the PI3 for the first time. When I do that, I notice that the key press points; whether the main switch or the three control switches – are not quite as sexy as their appearance would like to sell me. I can’t say exactly what is bothering me, but somehow half a millimeter stroke is missing or the click is a little too vague.
The app itself can do little, but enough on closer inspection. First, she searches for the PI3 and then offers me to pair it with a second source, in my case a MacBook Pro, which I do, and – thanks to Multipoint – I have two players, between which I like to Can switch moods back and forth or get the computer muted while the call is put through to me by the iPhone.
Then the app can switch off the voice prompts and carry out a software update, which was not necessary during my test. I still find it very good to be able to set a switch-off timer to xx minutes after inactivity – a function that I have not found in pretty much any other device I have tested and which usually led to the product leading to the death of the battery went through or initiated a shutdown after an unknown time.
What does Günther sound like?
The first listening impression of Günther or the PI3 is impressive. Right away and without the addition of EQ, the bass, mids, and treble are set up in such a successful relationship that it is difficult for me to determine what is disturbing or bad. Rich and velvety, fluffy and sublime, iridescent and penetrating. You simply choose the most beautiful attributes and do not bother me when you enjoy listening.
If I then listen to the PI3 for a longer time, I notice a small imbalance in the sound pattern; which is due to a bass that is a little too present, which radiates lightly into the mids and highs and forces them into the background. Of course, that also depends on the music you eat, of course. But if I had to complain about something, it was exactly that: The bass is a bit too emphasized for me.
The stage presents itself transparently and multi-layered far and wide in front of the inner ear and leaves the pleasant feeling of wearing the right in-ears, which also makes a good sound figure during sports, i.e. with increased exertion.
What is the secret of Bowers and Wilkins?
On the one hand, there are the dual hybrid drivers (one dynamic full-range and one balanced armature driver per listener side); which are driven with separate amplifiers and thus deliver thick basses, full mids, and beautiful heights to the amazing ears. Then the current aptX Adaptive Codec, which enables streaming of up to 24 bits at 48 kHz and, incidentally, generates little latency, i.e. lip-synchronized videos.
Then the PI3s are sitting really well. The optimal isolation of external noise due to high tightness does a lot, especially in the bass range. For the sake of completeness, it should only be mentioned here; that the impact sound cannot be magically wiped away by Bowers & Wilkins either; because the vibrations running through the body to the in-ears firmly connected to the ear are no more pronounced than with all others closing in-ears.
Günther calls.
I only mentioned the remote on the right side of the band briefly until I spoke on the phone; because despite the minimal irritation due to the spongy pressure point of the three buttons, everything is fine here. While the central button takes overall transport and telephone functions, the volume is precisely controlled via two additional buttons. It fits.
If I then call the editor-in-chief and inquire about the quality of my voice transmitted from the microphones built into the PI3; I get to hear the following: “Somewhat muffled” and “Yes, I can” up to “There are better things!”
Now that’s what I call a limited enthusiasm and note “Satisfactory” on my note on the PI3 with the note that especially with neckband in-ears; which are often used by people who use the phone a lot more closely; but don’t expect any here either Emergency session on the part of Bowers & Wilkins because of the microphone problem; because one is understood.
A few more words at runtime, which is decent at 8 hours but also not sensation; you have to consider how much battery can be built into such a thickening on the neck strap. The charging port comes up to date with a USB C connection.
