Bowers & Wilkins PX5 Black Friday Review
The Bowers & Wilkins PX5 comes in the usual fine box. In the slipcase there is a gray fabric case with reinforced lids and a rubber loop fastener in addition to the handset itself. The PX5 made available to us in blue is not as filigree as its predecessors; but it still attracts attention visually. The bracket made of carbon fiber composite not only feels good, it is also very conveniently adjustable in size. The joints and attachment on both auricles give a rock-solid impression. Coarsely woven, gray or blue outer fabric, depending on the model, affects the eye; wherever contact is made with the ear and head, soft synthetic leather gives a comfortable fit.
Technology that excites
Nothing is impossible: Bowers & Wilkins has packed everything into the PX5; that is currently technically possible at the recommended price of EUR 299. Bluetooth version 5.0 with the popular aptX Adaptive, Classic and HD codecs is what makes hi-fi purists think about purchasing a wireless headphone. There is ANC, an ambient hear-through function, USB-C is integrated and the PX5 can handle audio streams from the computer via a universal bus. A 3.5 mm input also provides analog access to the PX5.
Others can do the enumeration of technical features, but the interaction and fine tuning is always such a thing, and this requires engineering performance that you can feel when you first contact the PX5.
Dealing with technology
The Bluetooth path is the main communication channel. Not only does the music play here, but the Bowers & Wilkins app also communicates with the listener. Who – like me – initially and obviously installs the app entitled “B&W PX” will not be able to address the PX5 via smartphone. This created a bit of confusion in the first few minutes and a query to the test equipment agency. After a brief clarification, it was the same with the surprises mentioned at the beginning. The app titled “Bowers & Wilkins Headphones” would have been the right one.
The battery, which is about half charged in the delivery state, also allows you to try it out immediately without using the app: Bluetooth pairing took place in iOS, Android version 9 and macOS without conflict and within a few seconds. Thanks to the 5.0 standard, the PX5 remembers up to 8 connections and also establishes them without being asked when the Bluetooth partner is within range.
Automatic hearing
Up to two connections can be operated in parallel. And since the B&W PX5 has sensors that recognize the degree of use with extreme certainty, there is practically no need to worry about the operation. The Bowers & Wilkins PX5 is a pleasant companion thanks to sensors. As soon as you put it on and get it out of standby sleep, it announces via voice message that it is connected to the or both last active Bluetooth devices. In the rarest of cases, you will have to go to the Bluetooth menu of a smartphone or other player. If the listener is only put down for a short time, he not only interrupts the playback but also transmits a pause command to the player in order to continue with the music performance after restarting – very comfortably.
Also very practical: you sit at the computer, listen to music, browse through the pages; watch a video here, and listen to a podcast there. A call comes in on the “other line” – my iPhone in the test case – and the PX5 immediately stops the music and you can answer the call by pressing the button on the right earpiece once. When the conversation is over, the music continues from where you left off. The latter is of course a wonderful feature, especially for podcasts.
Noise-canceling
First, the PX5 shields adequately at normal ambient volume. As a pedestrian in the city, ANC should remain disabled. Horns, squeaking tires, or moody road users of any kind can at least be heard acoustically. If you want to put the sound on the listener from outside for a short time, you need to press the ANC button on the left twice. How much is to be transferred in the “environment switching” can be set in the app.
Here, B&W also offers the three NC modes: With “Low”, the PX5 offers a slight noise reduction that works well in open-plan offices, waiting rooms, or train stations. You withdraw without acoustically isolating yourself. “High” is the right choice on the plane. So little gets here that even the famous frequent flyer sleep, that is, slumbering without music, can definitely succeed. Ohropax was yesterday. The “Auto” setting is interesting, as it reduces very diffuse and almost imperceptible disturbing noises without having to feel that you are isolated from the world.
Noise-canceling not only works very effectively, it doesn’t change the sound – no matter what mode. Another plus: ANC does not add any noticeable noise, not all competitors can do that.
Sound
In addition to the barely noticeable change in sound when switching on noise-canceling in Bluetooth mode, the Bowers & Wilkins PX5 also shows when listening to our Spotify playlist that great care was taken when voting. The Bowers & Wilkins PX5 reproduced bass-emphasized, electronic genres as well as acoustic recordings in a very nuanced manner. Using the aptX HD codec with an Android smartphone and high-resolution audio material; the PX5 showed what it was made of. Diana Krall’s title “Superstar”, played in parallel both as a Spotify stream via iPhone and as a 24/96 FLAC via the VLC player using the HD codec; already showed an audible upgrade on Android One on Android One enjoyable listening experience. The fine drawing strings and the characterful voice were reproduced even more nuanced in the HiRes version.
Heard via cable, the HiRes material revealed a similar picture, although its sound changes in contrast to pure wireless operation. Without ANC, it peaks at 300 Hz and falls continuously downwards; while providing a more rounded bass range with active noise cancellation. Nevertheless – electronic music was always played calmly, especially with high-energy basses. No droning and fluttering of basslines, no painful sibilants in higher areas, everything was reproduced as detailed as possible. All in all, the PX5 gets full marks from me in terms of sound.
