The main difference is the design: encircling the ear instead of lying on it, so we should really only be concerned with the question of whether a surcharge of 100 euros can somehow top the PX5er.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 Black Friday Review

External values

The slipcase includes a hard case with a zipper and two 1-meter cables for USB on the one hand and a mini-jack on both sides. Like the PX5 (for testing), the PX7 can be operated in the classic analog way.

The listener himself has the composite fiberglass bracket; which inspires confidence and makes me think that this component cannot actually break. The bracket, which is virtually identical to the PX5, is covered with fabric – as with the on-ear pendant. At the bottom, we find supple fine leather. The same materials cover the two auricles, the control buttons of which are arranged identically to the little brother.

So we do not find any gesture control or touch-sensitive outsides; but buttons that are easy to locate, which suits me personally. But what suits me even more with the PX7 is the cleverly acting sensors; which virtually take away the controls – but more on that later.

Best connections

The two PX headphones of the 2019 series offer the best in terms of Bluetooth codecs and profiles, which is technically possible. On the audio side, for example, the Qualcomm aptX HD codec is supported, which, with the appropriate player, also reproduces HighRes audio files in the highest quality. Like the PX5, the PX7 was almost identical here. The aptX Adaptive Codec is also used for the first time. However, we could not test this in terms of audio quality because we did not have compatible players. The problem-free pairing with a maximum of two partners to be operated simultaneously, the ability to remember connections and to quickly re-establish them is simply a blessing in everyday use.

Noise-canceling

The bottom-left button switches between three working stages of the very effective adaptive noise cancellation. “Low” allows ambient noise. You can hear conversations, keyboard claps, and doorbells. “High” protects well, although other parties’ loud conversation and workplace neighbors’ keys still clatter. Power sleeping without music is extremely irritating.

“Auto” ANC is intriguing. External testing indicated that all front-facing sound occurrences are as muted as feasible. However, side acoustic waves pass. This may be useful in the city if the tram is recognized sooner to prevent danger, while traveling through the forest, the coming wild boar decaying might be noticed a few seconds earlier.

I propose “communication mode” or “environment switching” for slow learners like myself. Long-pressing the button greatly decreases the audio and allows microphone-captured ambient sounds through. The “live transmission” is excellent. It sounds natural.

Passive noise cancellation, i.e., ear pads alone, is enough for daily use. Since the sound seldom changes during analog transmission, I give the PX7’s ANC full points. Engineers did well in reducing noise in the scarcely noticeable region.

Handling

What I really liked about the PX5 is also technically offered on the PX7. Sensors register the touchdown, even briefly releasing an earpiece from the ear also generates a pause command on the player. So you are largely freed from operating steps. With the PX7, the fine-tuning in terms of accessibility did not seem to me to be completely finished. I had to increase the sensitivity of the sensors in the app to achieve a result similar to that of the PX5.

The usual tests in everyday office life were similar to the PX5 positive. Skype calls and video conferencing via Slack worked well. And the intelligibility of calls was basically good. Working on the computer via Bluetooth very relaxed, incoming calls on the second (Bluetooth) line automatically interrupted the media playback on the computer with a pause command. In addition, the PX7 can also address via USB as an audio device (sound card), so music could be streamed digitally. This means that media jobs such as audio and video editing are possible with virtually no latency.

The battery life – specified 30 hours with activated noise canceling – should not cause problems with sufficient care when recharging, especially since energy can be filled up very quickly via USB-C. The battery of the PX7, like that of the PX5, should be replaceable. I think that this happens as a fee-based service through specialist retailers.

Sound

The sound texture of the PX7 is very similar to the PX5, which is not surprising. The strengths of the current Bowers & Wilkins listeners naturally also benefit from the top model: across all genres, unexcited and true to detail, the PX7 reproduces all styles to the utmost satisfaction, whereby the possibility of streaming high-resolution audio via Bluetooth should convince even audio purists. In this regard, I refer to the test of the PX5.

Even though I tested both B&W listeners with a time delay, I dare to say; that they both sound very similar and that the PX7 also gets the highest score from me.
