Dali IO-6 Black Friday & Cyber Monday Review
Functionality
The Scandinavian manufacturer’s clear focus is on good sound quality. The speakers from Dali value this. As a result, certain comfort and business functions are deliberately avoided. There is an on / off switch on the right earpiece, which also initiates the pairing. There is also a button that switches between the noise-canceling operating modes and a USB port; that can also use for playback from the computer thanks to class-compliant drivers. The second earpiece has a connection for either active or passive cable operation. Dali surprisingly classifies this passive mode as a fallback solution, although the drivers here speak a different language with powerful, convincing sound and underpin the well-thought-out basic construction.
The manufacturer confidently foregoes an app for control. There are the usual control options with unusual implementation directly on the headphones. The outside of the right earpiece does not rely on touch but on touch functions. Pressing the central company logo starts and stops playback and jumps between tracks with multiple clicks. For this purpose, calls are coordinated with this key. Volume control switches are hidden in the lower and upper areas of the earpiece. Very elegant and reliable to use – in my opinion, a clear advantage compared to the small buttons or the often somewhat unpredictable touch functions of the competition.
The battery life is a practical value of a maximum of 30 hours (depending on the level and the use of noise reduction) with 2.5 hours of charging time. Due to the integrated noise-canceling electronics, the immense playing time of the smaller model IO-4 doesn’t achieve.
Noise-canceling
With a simple button on the right earphone, you can switch between switched on and off the noise canceling and the transparency mode, which emits ambient noise to the loudspeakers for improved perception of the environment when the earphones are put on. By automatically pausing the music playback you can communicate comfortably here. Personally, I would have preferred to be able to switch transparency mode and noise canceling separately. Instead, you always switch back to the mode without noise reduction after deactivating the communication option.
In its price range, noise-canceling has to compete with manufacturers such as Sony, Bose, and Sennheiser. The passive noise suppression of the IO-6 is convincing. In terms of electronics, the test device works tamer and less intensively compared to the Sony WH-1000XM3 (for the test). Low-frequency and static background noises are primarily filtered out here. This works well with appealing results; even if the circuit’s own noise somewhat diminishes the impression when the music playback is switched off. However, Dali does not achieve the flexibility, configurability, and intensity of the top providers in this field. I would have liked at least a multi-stage switchable intensity of the noise reduction.
Sound
In practice, the IO-6 impresses with its sound. In fact, you will be rewarded with a detailed, balanced, and transparent rendering; which is further improved in mobile mode by noise-canceling due to an improved signal-to-noise ratio.
The sound balance is neutral so that you don’t have to worry about basses or beautiful loudness curves. The bass reproduced honestly and down to the basement. Without sounding superficial, the IO-6 delivers the necessary details in the form of contour, tonality, and dynamics. These subtle nuances can enjoy especially in quiet listening environments. For example, the majestic element and the simultaneous proximity of a classical orchestra are credibly conveyed. The same applies to dynamic reproduction with good jazz recordings (Esbjörn Svensson Trio). The different intensive drum and piano accents worked out in the best possible way, without the sound image losing cohesion.
In combination with the finely resolved highs, there is a wonderful presence in the form of a remarkably fast and open sound that is by no means a matter of course for closed systems. The good transient reproduction also contributes to a clear location of the sound elements in the stereo panorama, but also to a good spatial drawing for a closed listener. The limit to hardness is clearly shown. The drivers themselves do not create such hardship.
The IO-6 can also handle modern sound aesthetics just as safely. In Yello’s “Pan Blue”, the electronic sounds move impressively across the entire frequency spectrum; whereby the layers of the different sound generators clearly delineated and the panning effects swirl precisely around your ears.
