Scope of delivery
The Denon AH-D9200 (or in short: D9200) is a circumaural, closed hi-fi headphone, which is delivered in an elaborate large storage box. It immediately makes it clear that the manufacturer is not simply another headphone. Two interchangeable cables of different lengths are included as well as a cleaning cloth and a plug adapter.
Material, design & processing
No question about it: with the D9200, its hearing cups made of fine real wood make an enormous impression at first glance. Instead of “zebra wood” like the D5200 (for testing) or walnut wood like the D7200, Denon uses Japanese bamboo. Its light wood has a fine horizontal grain. According to the manufacturer, the choice of materials should at the same time dampen unwanted resonances as well as a warm and lively sound. The wood also contributes to the elegant appearance of these over-ears. Apart from the wood, for me, the elegance of the headphones is due to their simplicity and its clear, no-frills shapes. They almost hide the fact that the design of the D9200 is extremely ergonomic down to the last detail.
Once in hand, the ear and headband pads of the D9200, which are made of soft sheep leather and have been sewn very cleanly, are immediately noticeable. In the case of the headband leather, there is even topstitching that keeps the real leather cover in shape and also serves to ventilate the surface. To adjust the size, the earpieces made of die-cast aluminum are guided into the headband via polished steel struts. The high-quality material selection does not stop at the interior of the D9200. For example, the drivers are made of nanofiber material, which is intended to enable particularly detailed sound reproduction.
Technical details & numbers
The D9200 hearing cups accommodate 50 mm drivers, whose FreeEdge principle has been patented by Denon. With this free-floating bearing, you want to reduce disturbing resonances and maximize the fidelity. In addition, particularly strong magnets made from a special alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron are used. They are designed to output a low-distortion signal.
The exchangeable, fabric-covered OFC cables are silver-plated, and the contact surfaces of plugs and adapters are gold-plated for corrosion protection. The 3 m long cable with a large jack plug is intended for use on the hi-fi system. The second cable, on the other hand, is shorter and equipped with a mini jack plug so that it can be plugged into portable playback devices. A good choice is the separate direct connection of the two cable splices to the right and left ear cups. This eliminates “predetermined breaking points” that could result from passing the cable through the headband.
According to the manufacturer, the transmission range of the D9200 extends from a whopping 5 Hz to a dizzying 56 kHz. In comparison to the D5200 model, this means that the heights are increased by an immense 16 kHz. Its impedance of around 23 ohms also makes it a good choice for low-performance headphone preamps, such as smartphones, iPads or iPods. The maximum sound pressure level we measured is “only” at just under 96 dB SPL.
Handling
The interchangeable ear cushions of the D9200 are put on the hearing cups instead of putting on them. This means that the cushions can still be rotated even after they have been opened. On the one hand, this has the advantage that the position of the ear pads can be individually adjusted. On the other hand, it can also cause it to slip and thus lead to a poorer fit. Thanks to their filling with memory foam, the ear cushions of the earcups adapt optimally to the ear and head. The headband mechanism for size adjustment is rasterized and therefore “remembers” the last selected size. The hearing cups themselves can be rotated and swiveled, which contributes to the overall good fit of the headphones.
The medium pressure of the headband ensures good, because comfortable and safe to wear even over longer periods. This is also because the D9200, thanks to the aluminum bracket and bamboo wood, only weighs 468 g including the cable. In practice, the 3 m long HiFi cable also offers sufficient distance reserve. At 1.35 m, the shorter cable is optimally dimensioned for use on the go; because it can be stowed under clothing without being noticed or rolled up. The fact that no complicated proprietary system is used for the connection of the interchangeable cables; but simple mini-jack plugs are used; underlines the high level of simplicity by which Denon makes the handling of the D9200 a pleasure.
Sound character
The definition of the heights is unobtrusive on the D9200 and makes it sound wide and open. This is also due to its reproduction in the super high range. Here he gives depth and dimension to the sound. At the same time, its extensive frequency spectrum in the high tones ensures that hardly a nuance of high-frequency details is lost. Even if the subjective description of signal qualities inevitably seems almost esoteric: The D9200 sounds more “silky” than “aggressive” in the treble, more “warm” than “cold”.
In the area between “warm” sounding highs and appealing basses, the D9200 appears with differentiated mids. They provide a wonderfully “three-dimensional” sound, which, in combination with the immense reserves of the Denon headphones, supports both its good stereo impression and its ability to create an appealing depth range. The combination of highs and mids means that the subjective signal resolution of the D9200 is absolutely high quality. Depending on the music production, the hissing sounds of female vocals stand out slightly, but still don’t lead to too bad hissing. With regard to its playback dynamics, I like the mapping of transients with the D9200. The drivers act quickly and precisely, producing a consistently powerful sound.
The bottom line is that these headphones never sound pretentious at any time. But if you are expecting an eye-opening experience of a special class, you don’t have to be disappointed. On the other hand, the “smooth” tonal impression that the D9200 makes is due to its excellently balanced frequency response. The resonances in the bass range, which are often present with closed headphones and which either provide a drone or a crunchy sound, cannot be heard here, for example.
Target group
The D9200 should please fans of very different music genres as hi-fi headphones. The sub-basses are good for EDM and urban music. The unexcited mids ensure that rock and metal sound “silky” with this listening aid. The detailed depiction in the heights can make the hearts of jazz and classical music lovers beat faster. With all of this, the buyer of the D9200 can expect a “silky smooth” sound in all frequency ranges.
