Scope of delivery, design & processing
The Final Sonorous III comes with a detachable cable and a plug adapter on a 6.35 mm jack. That was it. The manufacturer remains true to its design concept for the Sonorous III and optically sends it into the race with clear 70s / 80s bonds. The plastic of its case adorns a wet look finish. This means that there are no problems with fingerprints on the black surface. The earcups are closed off by a metal ring around the ear pads. The ear cushions themselves are made of soft synthetic leather.
I like the choice of materials and processing of the Sonorous III. It offers the headband made of sheet steel, already known from other Final headphones, on which the earpieces can be adjusted continuously. All encapsulated elements are locked with screws so that maintenance is possible in the event of an emergency. The ear pads of the Sonorous III are also interchangeable.
Technology & handling
Unlike the Sonorous VI, for example, which uses a combination of dynamic and balanced armature drivers, the Final Sonorous III only uses dynamic 50 mm drivers. This should focus the headphones more on the bass reproduction. An air outlet in the otherwise closed housing is said to improve the bass even further. The driver unit is directly connected to the housing with a wide front plate, which should prevent resonance. The titanium membrane is said to be able to reproduce high frequencies particularly rich in overtones.
The Sonorous III earpieces are mounted in a ball joint. This enables the listener to adjust both horizontally and vertically to the shape of the head. Unfortunately, because of this joint, the earpieces also have some play in terms of their rotation. In connection with their high weight, the headphones will not fit securely when the head moves faster. With little movement, the relatively heavy headphones sit comfortably on the head. Ear pads and headband padding ensure that the contact pressure does not appear as high in practice as it reads on paper. The ear cushions also close well, so that the isolation from outside noise is really good with these headphones.
Note:
As with other final headphones, the cable length is just 1.45 m in this case. Both for the hi-fi area and for monitor use, at least a longer cable length should be chosen for my taste. It would be even better if Final donated another cable to the headphones. The enclosed cable is attached by the turn mechanism and therefore sits bombproof. Exactly this rotating mechanism also has a problem: Cables that do not have the small safety hooks that are on the plugs do not stop in the Sonorous III. This means that only proprietary cables from the manufacturer can be used.
That would not be tragic if there were (as with other Sonorous models) metal kink protectors on the cable of these headphones, which pose the risk of kinking the cable at their outlets. I would feel much safer as a user if either a tried and tested solution, such as rubberized cable outlets, had been used, or if there was also the option of using cables from other providers.
Sound character & areas of application
The Sonorous III should output clear and transparent sound. Final doesn’t promise too much here. The headphones sound brilliant through and through. Its height rendition is fine and detailed. He is often at the limit of hissing when it comes to singing signals. Ultimately, however, this does not happen. Instead, it also provides fine drawing in the middle. In combination with the brilliant highs, this ensures an exciting tonal depth and an impressive stereo impression.
Many headphones have problems with the mid-range playback of guitar music. Not so the Sonorous III. It sounds sufficiently warm in the relevant frequency range so that listening to alternative rock; and metal with these headphones is also fun. These final headphones have a “wiry” sound. The Sonorous III is discreetly set up in the basses; but can reproduce the bass of EDM productions differently and even deliver sub-basses in moderation. Support for an EQ is required, depending on the production. Due to its detailed sound, I can actually imagine; that some buyers will also use the Sonorous III for monitoring in the (home) studio. Last but not least, the headphones also look great on smartphones due to their low impedance and short, straight cable.
