The latter is quite difficult due to a metal frame. Here, the padding is made using a strong layer of memory foam, while the outer skin is made of a combination of microfiber and lamb leather, which offers the best wearing comfort for long listening sessions. The leather has additional micro-perforations, which according to the manufacturer actually lead to an improvement in sound quality compared to other ear pads.
The cables are routed on both sides. The oxygen-free three-meter connection cable with a professional, gold-plated 6.3 mm Neutrik jack connected via lockable LEMO plugs and can, therefore, be replaced. It is explicitly low-resistance and offers a high level of electromagnetic immunity. The headphones themselves are delivered in a large, stable case with a leather coating. If you like it a little more elegant, you can optionally purchase a suitable headphone stand.
Special features of the dynamic open, hand-made at Focal in Lyon, over-ear construction are the wafer-thin 40 mm drivers made of beryllium. This material is significantly stiffer than titanium, but at the same time lighter. Excellent conditions for a precise membrane, which in this case is just 25 μm thick – the sound-transmitting mechanism is correspondingly feather-light and impulsive. In addition, there is the special M-shape of the membrane, which further reduces possible distortions and phase errors. The drivers were moved slightly forward and angled to improve the spatiality or to reduce the effect of in-head localization. Nevertheless, and so much anticipated, this trick does not turn the utopia into a pair of speakers.
Sound
I tested the Utopia with the Arche headphone amplifier, also from Focal. This served as a converter and backend for various files from a MacBook Pro with Audirvana (for testing) as a player, including HiRes and DSD source material.
With open headphones, the Utopia plays incredibly light and airy. Since in this construction inevitably sound also penetrates outside, the test candidate is generally recommended for audiophile home use. At the same time, it is also aimed at professional users for the assessment of mixtures in sound control rooms and for cutting work.
The mids map the central listening area just as safely. Acoustic, electrical, and electronic instruments and voices provide the mood of a recording to which our ears react sensitively. With Utopia, everything has its place in a homogeneous, yet clearly delimited interplay. Depending on the source, the headphones work out the intimacy of reduced compositions, the majestic fullness of an orchestra, the necessary pressure in rock, and the frosting in pop.
As expected, the beryllium also shows its strength in the high frequencies in the form of the highest level of detail and impulsiveness, silvery airiness, and the lack of hardness on the part of the driver. The speed has a direct impact on the splendid breadth; and clearly defined representation of the stereo panorama, including the movements occurring there – lively stereo mixes such as “Pan Blue” by Yello literally shimmer around your ears.
