Garmin Vivofit 4 in the test: fitness tracker without heart
The design
There are a total of four different models to choose from with the vívofit 4. A black model in sizes S / M and L, as well as a tracker in white and a variant in black with yellowish dots. The other two color options are only available in size S / M. In addition, you can buy and replace additional tapes. So you have another two colors to choose from for a good 20 euros. In our test, we chose the plain black model. The bracelet is fluted with small diamonds, which gives the fitness tracker an interesting texture.
The display, including the wide button below the display, degrades the appearance of the tracker. The size of the display is out of proportion to the button and body of the bracelet. People with poorer eyesight will have problems reading this display. Especially since the display can hardly be seen in the dark without activating the backlight. Cheaper devices, such as the Yamay SW350 or the Galaxy Fit e from Samsung, offer a larger or more readable display.
Processing
The vívofit 4 is very comfortable to wear. The somewhat firmer part of the tracker, in which the display is also located, nestles optimally around the wrist. The bracelet also has a very firm shape, making it easy to pass through the eyelet and also firmly attached to the wrist. Overall, the vívofit 4 makes an extremely stable impression. Only the button on our test device had a little leeway. Thanks to its water-resistance of 5 ATMs, you can also wear the fitness tracker while swimming and showering.
The setup and operation
o use the vívofit 4, you need the companion app “Garmin Connect”. This is available for download for iOS and Android. In the course of setting up vívofit 4, you create a user account there, to which your fitness data will be assigned. Above all, the community aspect of Garmin, where you can measure yourself against your friends in challenges, had a positive effect on our motivation in the test.
The connection to the smartphone went smoothly in our test. And even if the setup requires a few steps, you can adjust the device and the settings in the app as best as possible to your preferences. “Garmin Connect” also allows extensive data exchange with Apple Health. Unfortunately, Google Fit is currently not supported.
The packaging comes with a quick start guide, through which you can quickly get to know the basic operation of the vívofit 4 without any previous knowledge of fitness trackers. The menu is largely clear. However, the app offers more options. However, the many numbers and menu items initially seem overwhelming. Nevertheless, take enough time to get to know the individual options in order to optimally set the app and the tracker.
Battery life
The vívofit 4 is not powered by a battery, but by a button battery that should last up to a year before it needs to be replaced. This means that the tracker does not need to be loaded after a few days. However, it is also more common to read on the Internet that the battery had to be replaced after only two months.
