Best Google Pixel 3 XL Black Friday – Google’s new high-end smartphone Pixel 3 XL stands out above all because of a smart camera: In the test, it scores with artificial intelligence, almost unsurpassed photo quality, and smooth video. But for the price of a Pixel 3 XL (around 950 euros) there are better-equipped models. Google has currently lost the connection to the top of the smartphone, the pixel is only of limited use as a reference cell phone for the current Android. Only the unadulterated Android, including a three-year update guarantee, remains the argument for buying the new Pixel 3 models.

Google Pixel 3 XL Black Friday Review
Pixel 3: The new generation of Google mobile phones
Like the old one, the new Pixel family also consists of two members: the Pixel 3 with a 5.5-inch screen in 18: 9 format (click here for the test) and the Pixel 3 XL with 6.3 inches in 18.5: 9 format. Both smartphones are protected with Gorilla Glass 5 and surrounded by an aluminum frame. However, the back is less smooth than conventional glass backs, because Google has made it more “grippy” and less prone to unsightly grease stains. Both pixels are IP68 certified, which means they are protected against the ingress of dust and water.
Pixel 3 XL with OLED display
Unlike the Pixel 3, the Pixel 3 XL has a feature that is currently often installed at the top of the screen: a notch. It also protrudes relatively far into the display. This makes it almost borderless, but the bottom edge of the screen is still relatively wide.
Google uses an OLED panel that covers 144 percent of the standard RGB color space. The colors look strong, especially black really appears black. In addition, the display supports HDR technology, so it can display videos and photos in high contrast and color. We like the display quality. A slight bluish tint is noticeable when viewed from the side, but it has improved significantly compared to the display of the Pixel 2 XL.
At 3,960 × 1,440 pixels (QHD +), the resolution of the 3 XL is higher than the Models 3 (2,160 × 1,080) and the pixel density of 523 PPI also exceeds its sharpness (443 PPI). The Pixel 3 XL shines bright enough, but not nearly as bright as the iPhone XS, for example. We measure a maximum value of 407 candelas per square meter for the Pixel 3 XL. The iPhone XS ( for the test ) manages almost 300 candelas per square meter more. This difference is particularly noticeable under direct sunlight – the iPhone is then easier to read.
Typical pixels: main camera with only one lens
No matter how many cell phone manufacturers currently use dual or triple cameras, Google remains with a single lens on the back of its new pixel smartphones. This snaps with 12.2 megapixels and has an f / 1.8 aperture and an optical image stabilizer. The photo quality is impressive, the photos are detailed and sharp. Colors and contrasts are right. However, we cannot determine a difference in quality in direct comparison with the predecessor Pixel 2 (XL) in daylight or in dim light.
How is it compared to the iPhone XS? We wanted to know more about this and compared the twilight photos of the iPhone XS with the Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. All photos are on the same level and are very good and detailed due to the poor lighting conditions. While the iPhone XS captures details a little better, the pictures of the pixel models are less noisy and the colors are more natural. Another plus point for the pixels: the optical image stabilizer ensures blur-free photos, and it also does a good job with video recordings.
In addition to the stereo speaker, the notch of the Pixel 3 XL also has an 8-megapixel front camera. But that’s not all. For the first time, Google uses a second lens at the front that can take selfies in wide-angle (97 °). As with the Pixel 2, selfies with the Pixel 3 XL look very sharp. The depth of field effect is also used again and works at least as well as with other dual cameras. It can also be adjusted afterward as you wish.
Versatile Pixel 3 camera thanks to Artificial Intelligence
Thanks to artificial intelligence, Google has numerous tricks up its sleeve when it comes to photography with the Pixel 3 models: Google’s so-called “super res-zoom”, for example (“res” stands for resolution), combines several images into one image, thus simulating a zoom function and ensures sharp, detailed images even without optical zoom.
With the “Photobooth” feature, the KI-Cam triggers automatically when it thinks it is going to hit the perfect moment – for example, when the photo model smiles or grimaces at the face. In addition, she recognizes the best shot from several shots, on which, for example, no one has closed his eyes. It can also focus on moving objects by simply tapping on the subject. Even if you move the cell phone, the camera does not lose focus.
The new feature “Night Sight” is supposed to provide usable results; when shooting in darkness, where you don’t actually try to take pictures. However, we have not yet been able to try it out; “Night Sight” will only be available with a software update sometime during the year.
