Pixel 4: design and first impression
The Pixel 4 XL is based on the same simple design as its little brother: there are no clear edges, and there are no glitter effects. The back of the glass is pleasantly matt in the white version, only a black rectangular camera block (with the same rounded corners) protrudes.
Google has completely deleted the fingerprint sensor. With the white variant, the clear shapes and the contrast of black and white remind of noble design from the seventies, as can be seen in the science fiction classic “2001”. This wow effect is lost in the black version, especially since the surface is kept shiny.
The display changed after the update
The Pixel 4 XL carries a high-contrast OLED screen in 19: 9-page format, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The diagonal reaches 6.3 inches, and the resolution with QHD + (537 PPI) is significantly higher than with the smaller Pixel 4 (5, 7 inch Full HD + with 444 PPI). In the original test, the Pixel 4 XL display disappointed in one important discipline: at 428 candelas per square meter, it was much too dark and so unusable for sunny days.
More than four months later, on March 2, 20201, Google then presented the big pixel feature drop update with more than 10 innovations. And that was it! During another test in the laboratory, the brightness (after irritation by backlight) suddenly reached a brightness that was more than 200 candelas higher than just under 700 candelas. The enormous brightness of the Pixel 4 XL does not reach the Galaxy S20 series of well over 1000 candela. Nevertheless, one thing is certain: Pixel 4 XL users can finally look forward to sunny days.
90 Hertz display with handbrake
Exciting: The display panel manufactured by Samsung comes with a 90 Hertz refresh rate – a function that Samsung has not yet offered in its smartphones. The 90 Hertz display allows smoother scrolling and swiping in apps. Opinions differ widely when it comes to assessing the 90 Hz mode: some may no longer use a smartphone with less Hertz, and others may not notice it. Clever though: To save energy, the Pixel 4 XL reduces the repetition rate to 60 Hertz when the higher rate is not required. In addition, the Pixel 4 XL lowers the refresh rate even at low display brightness.
Battery life
In the battery test, the large Pixel 4 XL (battery capacity: 3,700 mAh) lasted 14 percent longer than the small Pixel 4 (2,800 mAh), achieving almost seven hours of battery life in the new test procedure for uninterrupted intensive use instead of just under five and a half. The Pixel 4 XL is about the same level as the Galaxy S10. A decent but not outstanding value. For comparison: endurance runners like the iPhone 11 Pro Max or the Huawei P30 Pro run over eight hours in the new test procedure!
Pixel 4 XL in the test: conclusion and buying advice
Technically, the Pixel 4 XL is an upgrade from its predecessor: the new telelens and improved camera software expand the photo possibilities, the design appears modern and pleasantly independent. And: the battery offers more power. However, at least one weakness of the predecessor remains: The great OLED screen is far too dark. Too bad: Google does not use an ultra-wide-angle lens. But still important for a purchase decision: Google guarantees three years of updates (Android and security updates).
