JBL Bar 2.1 Black Friday 2022 Reviews
JBL has revised its popular “Bar” series over the past year and presented three brand new soundbar models at the IFA last September. Between the all-in-one solution, i.e. sound bar with a built-in subwoofer, and the 5.1 model, our current test pattern is in the 2.1 design. For 350 euros, Harman promises an authentic cinema experience – including deep bass. This promise can also be found in the model name: Bar 2.1 Deep Bass.
The associated subwoofer with the dimensions 24 × 24 × 38 centimeters does not turn out to be unusually large. Thanks to its rather simple design, it should find its right to exist in most living rooms.
What we like about the JBL Bar 2.1 straight away is the soundbar’s high-quality housing compared to its predecessor, which hides four racetrack drivers and two tweeters in this model. Leaner design paired with powerful sound – does JBL’s calculation work?
Easy installation
The theory is that soundbars can be installed quickly and easily. At least as often, there may be a little more effort involved in the setup process. That is not the case here. In addition to the power from the socket for the bar and sub, we just lay an HDMI cable to the TV (ARC) and you’re ready to go.
If you prefer to connect the Blu-ray player directly, use the HDMI input (unfortunately only version 1.4), alternatively there is nothing standing in the way of the optical cabling.
There are not many setting options. Only the sub-intensity can be adjusted via low, middle or high. The connection via WLAN is reserved for the larger model, we play music wirelessly via Bluetooth. We make these settings using the eight available buttons on a small but nice remote control. Alternatively, the volume and source and of course the power status can be set on the top of the bar.
Right in the middle there instead of just
It starts with the popular test strip Mad Max Fury Road. The confused voices in the opening scene are easy to locate, the slender bar masters the spatial division very neatly. There is a “thumbs up” for the surround decoder.
Despite the limited possibilities that a soundbar offers, it gives a clear idea of the promised experience in the middle. Another plus point: Despite virtualization, the action doesn’t seem artificial in any way.
But what about the “Deep Bass” promise from Harman International Industries? For the necessary buzz in the living room, it is recommended to use the “middle” or “high” setting of the subs. The action fans get their money’s worth.
If you apply audiophile standards, we still lack a bit of punch and cleanliness, which is particularly noticeable at high volumes. For this, the subwoofer comes deep into the level cellar, its lower cut-off frequency is 33 Hertz. So JBL didn’t promise too much here.
We would have liked musical pearls like Adele’s “Hello” to be a little more brilliant and transparent. For a soundbar without its own center channel, however, her voice sounded clear and distinct.
Conclusion
JBL’s latest 2.1 soundbar does not need an app, voice control, or various sound modes. Film fans will love the deep bass.
