JBL Bar Studio Black Friday & Cyber Monday Review
As mentioned at the beginning, the JBL Bar Studio is one of the “all-in-one” sound bars. You, therefore, have to do without an additional subwoofer, which is now mostly connected wirelessly. So that the soundbar does not buckle when playing bass, dual bass ports are integrated, which should enable the soundbar to operate at low frequencies of up to 60 Hz. The maximum total power of the sound bar is 30 W. This fires two 51mm woofers and two 38mm tweeters up to a maximum sound pressure level of 90 dB.
In the best case, when connecting to the TV set, you can use the HDMI slot (HDMI 1.4) with an audio return channel; and you can then control the soundbar directly with a variety of TV remote controls. There is also an optical digital input and an analog input. In addition, a USB interface (music playback only with FAT file system) and, as already mentioned, Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming in version 4.2.
Only the remote control, which is in credit card format and with membrane keys, is classified on average. For such small dimensions, it looks almost a bit overloaded, which of course speaks in return for good equipment. The volume buttons and the bass settings are highlighted in high-gloss black. The other surface can also be felt with your finger so that it is easier to change the volume in the dark.\
Sound
First of all, we want to establish a Bluetooth connection with the JBL Bar Studio and our smartphone. All you have to do is switch on the soundbar and select the Bluetooth input. With an acoustic signal, the device indicates that it is in an invisible mode and can be found. As “JBL Bar Studio” it is also displayed directly in the iPhone and both devices are connected with a click – this is also confirmed with an acoustic signal.
In the lower part of the frequency spectrum, we would like a little more volume and emphasis; but you just have to keep up with the existing, cramped dimensions, and the Bar Studio is already doing a spectacular job. The film mode can clearly show its strengths here and offers a very spatial and dense stage. Unlike the different modes, the virtual surround mode can only be activated or deactivated.
Here JBL offers a clear benefit and makes the sound process appear more immersive without interfering negatively with the overall process. For action-packed titles, we can definitely recommend JBL Surround Sound. Despite the broader backdrop, dialogues are always understandable and effects can be pinpointed.
In this extremely affordable entry-level segment, JBL offers an extremely neatly processed and solid soundbar with HDMI equipment and Bluetooth functionality, which is even equipped with an excellent functioning virtual surround mode. If you want more here, you have to dig deeper. A serious candidate for this is called Yamaha YAS-207 and already costs 349 EUR. This is equipped with a separate subwoofer, can also decode DTS and comes with an HDMI input (HDMI 2.0 + HDCP 2.2), can be controlled via Bluetooth app, and is equipped with DTS Virtual: X technology.
Conclusion
For less than 180 euros, JBL offers a soundbar that cleans up powerfully in the lower price range. Despite the low price, it offers very solid workmanship and material quality; as well as equipment that does not have to hide. Different sound modes are on board, also a virtual surround mode; that would not make a bad impression even on more expensive devices.
As the most important interface, only an HDMI input with an audio return channel and additional digital and analog inputs are integrated, some in this price range or even far above offer no HDMI equipment at all. Of course, from an acoustic point of view, you shouldn’t expect too much,
