JBL Club 950NC Black Friday Review 2023
Device control and voice service integration
The over-ears, which support the Bluetooth standard 5.0, can be paired directly when the device is switched on by pressing and holding the power button, which automatically puts the handset in pairing mode. If there is a radio connection, a 3-button remote on the right side of the shell is used to control device functions, with the central button starting and stopping playback and answering and ending calls. Voice assistants such as Bixby or Siri can also be called up with a double click.
The buttons on the outside are available for volume control and also enable title navigation by holding down the plus button to move forward and to jump back using the minus button. While the remote response was reliable and there were no connection problems in connection with various Android and iOS systems, the range of the Bluetooth connection was not particularly high at seven to eight meters. Especially since misfires occurred quite frequently in the movement. However, the multi-pairing with two devices, between which you can switch seamlessly, was convincing and there is also acceptable intelligibility when talking on the phone.
The integration of Google Assistant is also well implemented. As soon as voice control is set up via the JBL Headphones app, you can communicate with the assistant at any time via the surface of the left shell, which acts as an action button. The interaction includes both querying information and reading out messages and answering them with voice support, which can be useful in everyday life and when traveling.
TalkThru and Ambient Aware mode
The over-ears offer good shielding, but this not only has advantages, which is why the outside world can be amplified via the integrated microphones if desired. Both modes have a background noise, which is more pronounced with the TalkThru function. Nevertheless, perfect communication is possible by lowering the playback volume and raising voices in a targeted manner. In contrast, in ambient-aware mode, there is a general increase in ambient noise so that the environment can be perceived during playback. However, there is only direct access to one of the two functions via a button located on the left side of the tray. Which mode should be used is determined via the app.
Sound
The basic sound of the over-ears is quite universal and has a clear sound with present bass and treble. Overall, the bass foundation looks round, has a compact fullness without being overloaded; sounds well defined, and offers powerful listening fun, even if more depth could be available with hip-hop or club music. The headphones are equipped with a bass boost button on the right-hand side; which amplifies the bass range at the push of a button. However, the benefits are limited because the function tends to override; which varies depending on the device and was more common in the test field for iOS devices.
Compared to the basses, the mids appear a bit more reserved, which, however, show clearly with gentle; warm embossing, and reproducing vocals in an appealing way. The heights are also characterized by clarity and a certain liveliness; with a slight drop in the high-frequency range. Given the price, it seems questionable that no higher-quality audio codecs are supported. Therefore, regardless of the system used, the standard codec SBC must be used.
When the handset is switched on, the ANC mode is used automatically, which indicates a white illuminated LED. Since the noise suppression shares a button with the TalkThru or Ambient Aware function; holding it down for a longer time serves to deactivate and activate it. If the noise suppression is active, background noise has to be accepted; otherwise, there is a bass emphasis, which gives the sound a fuller density. Monotonous, low-frequency noise is particularly well hidden; while at least a noticeable attenuation occurs with complex sources such as street noise or kitchen radio.
