JBL E65BT Black Friday 2022 Review
Thanks to the length-adjustable, textile-padded temples and synthetic leather-padded, rotatable ear cups, this results in a high level of comfort. The headphones are generally tight, depending on your taste, maybe too tight, but also non-slip at a faster pace, which makes the E65BTNC ideal for use on the treadmill. In addition, the ear cups can be folded in for space-saving transport.
The test device works either via Bluetooth 4.1 or wired. The supplied single-sided cable has a smaller plug on the receiver side and offers a one-button remote control with an integrated microphone. Exemplary: The E65BTNC can not only work passively in cable operation but also use active noise canceling.
The switch for wireless operation is located on the right auricle. There are also switches for pairing and noise canceling. A three-button controls the functions start, stop, answering calls, volume control, track skipping, and calling up voice control in the smartphone. In cable mode, the button enables call processing, starting and stopping the music, and jumping between tracks.
The Bluetooth connection is stable in practice and has a sufficient range, for example for use with a television. Practical in this context: The E65BTNC can switch between two Bluetooth sources and thus switch a call to the handset during movie playback. The powerful Li-Ion battery provides an operating time of 15 to 30 hours after two to three hours of charging, depending on the use of Bluetooth and noise canceling.
Even the strong upholstery and the contact pressure provide a shield from the surroundings. As a closed system, noises can also be heard.
Basically, I would describe the comparatively quiet JBL E65BTNC as pleasantly balanced. So he does not need superficial bass emphasis. The reproduction of low frequencies turns out to be powerful, tight, and tonally comprehensible down to the deep bass. The 40 mm drivers only reach their limits at high levels.
The fundamental range is clearly defined in the middle. Voices, both male and female, have good transparency with high intelligibility. Any intimacy intended during production is also credibly transferred. The sound, which is open but never snappy in the treble, provides not only the desired gloss but also a convincing reproduction of the stereo panorama, which precisely shows subtle and drastic movements.
Transients are implemented quickly and thus allow good location, and space effects are clearly recognizable. The reproduction of natural spatiality, on the other hand, is, like almost every headphone, rather mediocre due to the in-ear location.
The dynamics are well mapped, which is why the E65BTNC is not only suitable for chart music and rock, but also for jazz and classical music. Especially with activated noise reduction, the listener gets closer to the sound.
The noise-canceling itself is not overly drastic, so there is no annoying diving bell effect. It offers good bass filtering and significantly reduces driving noise, for example on the train, to a low-frequency rest that is drowned out by the music. Other ambient noises and speech are also clearly reduced, but, as expected, not completely eliminated. On the other hand, high-frequency noises are annoying when the wind falls on the external microphones.
This is how you get the best results indoors. Without any music, you can sometimes hear a slight noise and occasional interference from other devices. However, the test device perfectly fulfills the purpose of decoupling ambient noise in general and improving the focus on enjoying music. At the same time, the quality of the noise reduction is not quite on par with the top products from Bose, Sony, and Sennheiser, which was not to be expected given the price. There is also no intensity control for the degree of noise reduction as well as a possible selective switching off of the circuit for fast communication.
Last but not least, I only have to rate the speech quality of the integrated microphone in the ear cup for calls as mediocre.
