A little too much of a good thing
125 x 285 x 130 millimeters and around two kilograms – at first glance, the JBL Xtreme looks like a decapitated 2-liter bottle. The round housing offers plenty of space for large membranes and accordingly ensures a powerful sound. Basses in particular come into their own with the JBL loudspeaker.
Smaller models like the Libratone Too cannot keep up here. With particularly deep tones and at high volume, however, the JBL Xtreme tries a little too much and sometimes starts to boom. The Bluetooth speaker does not have any major weaknesses in terms of mids and highs.Â
Overall, the sound does not come close to our balanced leader ( Docking D Fine ) but is still well above average. Thanks to the powerful bass, the JBL Xtreme is ideal for parties. Particularly cool: If you have two speakers, you can pair the two speakers for a stereo sound.

The operation of the JBL Xtreme is self-explanatory: at the push of a button, you can connect the speaker to your smartphone, tablet or PC using Bluetooth 4.1. Up to three devices can be connected at the same time and used for music playback. Alternatively, an AUX input is available.
The loudspeaker also has a power bank function and charges up to two devices with 5 watts each (1 ampere) or one with 10 watts (2 amps each). All connections are located under a waterproof fabric layer and can be reached via a rubberized zipper. This is sometimes a bit tedious, but it ensures that the loudspeaker is always safe from splash water.
A 10,000 mAh battery ensures long battery life. In the test, the JBL Xtreme lasts for 17 hours with pure music playback and only has to give in to the  Libratone Too  (around 20 hours of runtime). In terms of charging time, on the other hand, the JBL is the clear winner: while it is fully operational again after around three hours, the Libratone takes twice as long.
