Mackie MC-350 Black Friday Review 2023
Technical
At first glance, the technical data reads inconspicuously: 50-millimeter drivers are used, whose frequency range extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and which are astonishingly low at 36.2 ohms (averaged) against the amplifier. Accordingly, the “350s” can still deliver decent sound pressure on somewhat poorly performing end devices.
Outward appearances
You can see that the 350s cost around double their little brothers – the 250s. Because on the one hand the headband and the ear pad cover are made of genuine leather, on the other hand, the ear pads are sewn, which gives them a visible value. In general, the MC-350 make a pretty solid impression, because a lot of material was simply installed here, which gives them a very bulky look.
You can also tell by the weight because with 395 grams including cable, the listeners are not necessarily light. However, they distribute their mass well on the head and especially the binding seat, in which nothing “wobbles” contributes to the MC-350 being easy to carry. However, I say this against the background that I have a not too big skull – for people to whom nature has given a broader head the seat should already feel tight.
All in all, the MC-350 are not headphones that you forget after a while that you have them on. In view of the fact that this is primarily a monitor headphone and accordingly an airtight covering of the ear cushions on the head is an absolutely desired criterion; I consider this a plus – and not a minus point (which of course is completely the case with hi-fi headphones) would be different).
Sound
Right from the start, the MC-350 impressed me with the tonal physique and the remarkable “punch”. On a technical level, this is usually described with the term transient reproduction; it defines how precisely a headphone reproduces extremely short pulses (often in the microsecond range). The MC-350 not only has exceptionally crisp transient reproduction, but also a striking directness; if you didn’t know it, you might think you had an in-ear in your ears.
The MC-350 buys this “crispness” with relatively pronounced highs and high mids (clear, because this is where the “fast” impulses happen). This also ensures clarity; transparency; and is extremely advantageous when working in the studio or in recording situations because you don’t miss a detail like that. On the other hand; such a sound image is rather a bit “stressful” for relaxing music enjoyment in the lounge chair. In addition, the bass – which tends to be able to balance strong highs – places its priority in the area of the impulse rather than in the volume. All in all, I would like to give the MC-350 sound impression of the attributes “precise”, “clear” and “punchy”, less “beautiful”, “full” and “relaxed”.
The quality of the hands-free microphone did not really convince us; as a workaround if you are mixing a live concert in front of forty thousand people and want to order a pizza; it should work, for a longer discussion the sound is too muffled, and washed out.ư
