Master & Dynamic MH40 Wireless Black Friday
Scope of delivery
The MH40 Wireless comes with a USB-C charging cable and an interchangeable cable, a quick start guide and a folded information sheet. A small highlight is the included chic transport bag made of black linen. It is securely and quickly closed by a magnetic lock. In the bag there is not only space for the MH40 Wireless for transport, but also the two cables for the headphones in the zippered compartment at the front. Interchangeable and charging cables are covered with durable, high-performance fabric. The 3.5 mm jack plug is gold-plated for corrosion protection.
Design & material
The features of its outer shape correspond to the wired MH40. The headphones are available in the three colors Gunmetal, Black and the color combination Silver Brown. The pilot design of the MH40 is timeless due to its retro chic. The look of the headband mechanism also plays a part in this. The backplates, headband and changeable ear pads are surrounded by durable cow leather and soft lamb leather. This gives the headphones an elegant look. The earphones of the headphones are made of anodized aluminum and are as robust as they are light. The fact that the structure of the aluminum bodies has been redesigned also contributes to the lower weight compared to the cable variant. All heavily used hardware, however, is made of stainless steel. The quality feature “durability” is definitely the first priority for the MH40 Wireless.
As a little extra, the geo-coordinates of a sight are engraved on one of the hearing cups. These can be researched on the Master & Dynamic website. In the test model, it is the coordinates of London, for which a travel guide relating to art and culture is produced on the online pages. A nice gimmick that offers little added value. Because there are no real “secret tips” in the style of Old Street Records in Shoreditch or The Moth Club in Hackney.
When it comes to wireless technology, Master & Dynamic relies on Bluetooth 5.0 and the high-quality aptX codec and SBC for the MH40 Wireless. It offers a very good range of 30 meters and a long playback time of 16 to 18 hours. The built-in battery is half charged again in just 30 minutes and fully charged within 60 to 80 minutes. In order to have a clear voice sound when using the MH40 Wireless, the directional characteristics of the integrated microphone array filter out external noises. If no Bluetooth is available, the headphones can also be supplied with audio via cable. As with the wired MH40, the cable is also plugged in on one side for the wireless version. In this case, however, not with a stereo jack plug, but with a USB-C connection.
Instead of 45 mm drivers, the MH40 wireless driver works only 40 mm in size, but is also excited by neodymium magnets. It is surprising that the average impedance measured by us is only 14.7 ohms and is therefore almost half as large as specified by the manufacturer. The maximum sound pressure level of 99.34 dB (SPL) delivered in practice is a whopping 5 dB higher than that of its cable brother.
The lamb leather of the ear pads also nestles gently on the ears and head thanks to the memory foam that surrounds them. Due to its now even lower weight, the MH40 Wireless manages with an average contact pressure of 479.5 g. Long listening sessions therefore remain pleasant. The exchangeable ear cushions are simply put on and hold with a magnet. The size of the headband is infinitely variable. Its adjustment is a little stiff, but it is retained even after weaning. The headphones are not foldable, but their earcups can be rotated 90 ° so that they take up less space in the transport bag.
Bluetooth pairing is done at the push of a button. The respective connection status is made clear by a sound signal. In addition, a multi-colored LED provides information about the status of the pairing mode and the battery status. Call acceptance and termination work smoothly. The call acceptance button also serves as a pause / play button and for skipping tracks back and forth. This makes using the headphones child’s play.
The enclosed cable is adapted to the application area of the MH40 Wireless on mobile devices and is accordingly only 1.20 m. This makes it easy and easy to lay under clothing without having to store excess cable anywhere.
Sound & application area
The manufacturer promises that the Master & Dynamic MH40 Wireless will deliver the full, warm sound of the wired MH40 in its wireless edition despite technical innovations.
If you are looking for high-volume Bluetooth headphones for HiFi purposes, the MH40 Wireless is in good hands. The signal always remains distortion-free, even with strong club and dance basses. That’s a good thing, because it’s the rich bass that shapes the sound of these headphones. This creates pressure and thrust down to the sub-bass, which is really fun. The center area of the MH40 Wireless is sufficiently differentiated to ensure good speech intelligibility of vocal signals. The heights, on the other hand, are rather gentle. As a result, the sound of the headphones sounds a bit “capped” – from my point of view it lacks a little “airiness” at the upper end of the sound spectrum, because the super-high range could find more attention for my taste.
