Best Master & Dynamic MW60 Black Friday Review
Scope of delivery
The Master & Dynamic headphones come with an unpadded transport bag with a zipper. In addition, there is a leather case that is lined with velvet on the inside. The accessories of the MW60 are in this elegant box. It consists of a USB-C charging cable for the wireless unit as well as a cable and an adapter. A fabric cable bag is also included. A quick start guide and detailed operating instructions are also included. The scope of delivery is well positioned.
Design, processing & technology
The Master & Dynamic MW60 is a circumaural, closed wireless headphone, the design of which appears delicate from a distance. Once taken in hand, it quickly becomes clear that an absolutely robust workhorse is at the start. On the one hand, this is because the device, which is not too big, weighs over 350 g even without a cable. This is mainly due to its solid construction, which relies on metal struts made of black lacquered, stainless steel and real leather. Resistant cow leather is used on the outside of the headband and hearing cups.
On the other hand, soft lamb leather is popular on the inside of the headband and on the ear pads. Furthermore, the ear pads are characterized by memory foam. The contact points of the cable and adapter are gold-plated. A small red accessory on the top of the right ear cup should indicate the Leica lens. In addition, its border is reminiscent of the corrugation of a lens adjustment ring. In addition, the final plastic caps of the hearing cups are labeled “0.95”.
The headphones, which were completely black in the test, are available in five other color combinations, which emphasize the stainless steel of the device even more. Despite the comparatively small hearing cups, the MW60 comes with 45 mm drivers, in which powerful neodymium magnets work.
Functions & handling
In addition to the usual swivel mechanism, the MW60 also offers a rotating mechanism and a folding mode. As a result, the headphones adapt very well to the shape of the head and can be easily stowed away in the supplied case. The strong contact pressure of the headphones also ensures a secure fit. It is also necessary since the handset already weighs 352 g without a cable. The ear pads are interchangeable and are simply but securely held in place using magnets and locking pins. What is surprising for me is the very limited extension of the headband. Because the non-rasterized head size adjustment does not offer much scope with a maximum travel of just 13 mm. The cutouts in the ear cushions also hit the same notch. These headphones are really not for big ears and heads.
If the headphones are not operated via Bluetooth, the supplied cable can be plugged in. With a length of 1.20 m, it is optimally dimensioned for stowing under clothing. Here it becomes clear that Master & Dynamic thinks primarily about use on the go and not in the living room at home. The MW60 offers typical Bluetooth controls and distributes them on the undersides of both hearing cups. There is the on / off / pairing switch on the left and three control buttons for volume control, skipping back and forth and a call answering button on the right.
For use on smartphones, a microphone with omnidirectional characteristics is also installed, which automatically reduces background noise in the picked-up signal. Two LEDs embedded in the housing provide information about the battery and pairing status. A red knob on the top of the right ear cup indicates the optical sponsor, the Leica lens.
Sound character & areas of application
Powerful bass dominates the sound of the Master & Dynamic MW60. Modern pop music such as EDM or urban music not only sounds full with these headphones but in my ears is already slightly bass-heavy. However, one must keep in mind that the M&D headphones are capable of boosting from the sub-bass range to the lower mids, as well as being able to deliver a lot of pressure in all bass frequencies. Its mids captivate through a presence in the frequency range of the human voice and thus ensure excellent speech intelligibility. Guitar music like metal or rock never sounds sharp or cutting with these headphones.
In terms of volume, the headphones are set up well and give a lot of sound to the eardrums – just as it was expected with the values we measured. In addition, the MW60 delivers extremely “round” transients, so that it brings over double bass attacks from metal songs just as smoothly as shots and explosions from radio play productions. The difference between the attenuation of external noises and the acoustic isolation from the outside is even more obvious than with its small sibling MW50 +.
The MW60 sounds a little different in cable mode than in wireless mode. At its core, the sound impression shown when using Bluetooth is also audible here. But the headphones with cable offer much higher performance. In my ears, it looks extremely good on him. The depth graduation and stereo impression are much more impressive in wired playback. If you would like to hear the guitars in your favorite song a little more “sawing”, you will probably be more comfortable with the cable sound of the MW60 than with its Bluetooth sound.
