Design
The two smartwatches have grown up – that’s my first impression when I receive the Ticwatch E2 and the TicWatch S2. Both models reach me in neutral black. When I compare them with their predecessors, they have gone through an optical maturation process in my eyes. The first generation still looked very upbeat, which was achieved in particular by the two color versions in neon yellow and white. But they were also available in black.
A big compliment can also be given to the displays of the TicWatch S2 and E2. Both are 1.39 inches in size and with 400 x 400 pixels ensuring an extremely sharp display of all content. Operation is also perfect because the touchscreen responds excellently. The watch faces also come into their own here, of which Mobvoi has designed some attractive designs.
All in all, the TicWatch S2, like the TicWatch E2, satisfies me completely up to this point. The manufacturer masters the balancing act between a light wearable and the necessary robustness for all challenges. The wearing comfort turns out to be very pleasant and it is nice to see that some of the adjusting screws were turned in comparison to the previous generation. In particular, I count the new, more practical position of the button or the water resistance. In my opinion, the more mature look of both watches is also a positive aspect. The smartwatches are unisex models, but due to their diameter of a good 46 millimeters, they should still appeal to men. They can appear quite bulky on narrow wrists.
Functions and practical test
The prerequisite for the practical test – as is common for all Wear-OS smartwatches – is pairing with the smartphone. In my case, the task is to synchronize the watches with a Samsung Galaxy S8 +. To do this, Bluetooth and location services must be activated. You also need the Wear OS app, which can then be used to set up the device. The process is completed after a few minutes and the TicWatch S2 was just as easy to connect to the mobile phone as the E2.
Training with the TicWatch S2 as well as the E2 is quite draining on the battery. After one and a half hours of strength training, the battery level had halved. The battery was 15 percent poorer after a 20-minute run, which I think is acceptable. Mobvoi promises a battery life of up to 48 hours with the smartwatch. In the practical test, I did not quite make it to this value. In my opinion, one and a half days are realistic.
The brighter the screen is set, the more often the heart rate is measured and if the GPS module is still active during sport, this naturally affects the endurance of the watch. In any case, the two smartwatches are on average, which is fine. I find it gratifying that the energy supply is quick and works smoothly on the magnetic charging cradle. It took about an hour for the battery to return to 100 percent.
Conclusion
At first glance, the TicWatch S2 and the TicWatch E2 may be almost identical. In my test, it turned out that there are not only differences in the material used. The S2 also appears to be able to perform more reliable pulse measurements as a sportier variant. At this point, I don’t dare to judge whether this is an exception in my case or whether there are actually deviations. If you plan to do regular training with the smartwatch, I recommend the S2, because, in addition to a sportier look, it also consists of even more robust materials – after all, it is certified according to military standards.
Basically, however, both watches look absolutely high quality, neutral and attractive in design and as models suitable for everyday use. They show no weaknesses in basic functions such as smart notifications, downloading and using various apps, or even accessing the Google Assistant. It is also gratifying that the two versions are waterproof and come with rich technical equipment including GPS. But with their price, they are among the cheaper models on the market. They are not only recommended to beginners but should also satisfy more experienced wearable connoisseurs. Apart from the slight imprecisions in pulse measurement mentioned above, both versions convinced me – but the TicWatch S2 a little more.
