At the start, I take a look at the packaging before I turn to the smartwatch itself. I have to say that the Mondaine Helvetica was wrapped in a box that was quite large in terms of its dimensions – at least when I think of previous tests and thereby compare it with other models. But please do not misunderstand: This should not be a criticism. Rather, when the hybrid smartwatch arrives, it becomes clear that it is a high-quality accessory from Switzerland. Mondaine is therefore understated.
The scope of delivery is quite clear. This is not surprising since we are dealing with a wearable that does not need to be charged. Accordingly, there is no need for a cable and a plug. In addition to the watch, only a quick guide and a warranty booklet are included in the box.
It’s worth taking a closer look at the clock face. In addition to the hourly indices, which are shown in numbers, the four letters T, S, M, and A are also on the display. They are of course not without reason. With the “T”, the smartwatch draws my attention to incoming calls. The “M” provides information on incoming messages, while the “S” indicates that I have started the sleep recording. The “A” ultimately represents my progress in activity.
In terms of optics and workmanship, that remains my only – if it should be called – criticism. All in all, the smartwatch is a very successful accessory from Switzerland. It makes a constant impression and convinces me with perfect quality.
Functions and practical test
To get the Mondaine Helvetica going and connect it to my smartphone, I first have to download the required app. As a typical hybrid, it is equally compatible with Android and iOS. As a user of a Samsung Galaxy Note 9, I go to the Google Play Store. Meanwhile, iPhone owners are looking for the application from the App Store. It is called “MMT-365”. This may not be obvious since the name of Mondaine does not appear in it.
However, the brand uses this app together with other watch manufacturers from Switzerland. After installation, I add my smartwatch when I first open the application. I will then receive clear instructions on how to proceed. I should press the crown first. Then I choose “Start” on my smartphone and the search for the intelligent timepiece begins. I have to press the crown again. That’s it and the two devices are coupled with each other.
For everyone who can’t do anything with it: I can use the application on my smartphone to indicate that I want to wake up at 7:00 a.m. in the morning, for example. I also set an arbitrary time window of around 45 minutes. Within this range, the watch has a vibration alarm on the wrist when I slip into a light sleep phase. If I am only in deep sleep by the desired time, she simply wakes me at 7:00 a.m. Waking up in a light sleep phase has the advantage that we feel less wheeled. I have tested the possibility and can confirm: Yes, it works.
Conclusion
The Mondaine Helvetica is already considered a luxury smartwatch. In my opinion, however, the price is not yet so luxurious – rather, it is still affordable and cheaper than most comparable models from Switzerland. Its range of functions may be quite manageable, but what it can do it reliably.
What is astonishing is the very precise fitness tracking, including the determined calorie numbers. For me, the sleep phase alarm clock represents a clear added value – it always has to be remembered to start the recording in the evening and end it again in the morning. In my opinion, this is a minor disadvantage. Since the workmanship and design are also right, I can recommend the Mondaine Helvetica.
