Handling in practice
The handling of the headphones is absolutely practical. Its folding mechanism lets it fold up to a really small pack size. The memory foam of the ear pads ensures a comfortable fit even over long periods. The changeable velor pads, which are breathable and soft, also offer comfort. The headphones are also comfortable to wear thanks to their not too strong contact pressure. Nevertheless, the NDH 20 also sits securely on smaller heads. The size adjustment of the headband rasterized and in no way so smoothly that the selected size could inadvertently adjust when you put the headphones out of your hand.
The jack plug of the headphone cable can securely attache to the device thanks to a clever rotating mechanism. Because it is a one-sided attachment, the freedom of movement when using the NDH 20 is great. While the spiral cable can be extended to an immense length of 3 meters, the straight cable is particularly impressive for mobile use with its short length of only 1.50 meters. Gold-plated jack plugs ensure that there is no chance of corrosion.
The Neumann sound character
The sound of the Neumann NDH 20 described as linear in its advertising. And in fact, it is not just the first hearing impression that unexcited. The frequency range of the headphones ranges from 5 to 30,000 Hz and can therefore confidently described as “expanded”. This broad sound field is impressive in numbers and is also noticeable in terms of sound in the NDH 20. Assessing deep bass on headphones is often a problem, but not here. With ultra-deep TR808 kick drums from urban music and hip-hop; the Neumann headphones successfully cause trembling eardrums down to the deepest frequency regions. In the bass range above, the sound is always powerful and defined.
Due to a lack of mid-range boost and only a moderate 10 kHz contouring of the frequency curve of these headphones, the speech intelligibility of music tracks listened to with the NDH 20 is just as good as their production/mix is.
Note:
The restrained performance in the heights also speaks for the more “analytical” appearance of the NDH 20. Anyone who has listened to the device will be able to easily judge; how it is in their own production for the proportion of heights in the mix. In the super-high range, however, the bow of the NDH 20 appears to me to be a little over the top. Although it still provides a decent basis for signal evaluation here; I notice that even elsewhere, highly brilliant-sounding modern pop music lacks some openness and “air” when played through these headphones.
Transients imaged powerfully by these headphones, but they do not have the last precision that other headphones generate using the associated height components. And the stereo impression also suffers a little from the covered sound of the NDH 20. The stereo stage offered sounds slightly restricted; and appears relatively narrow even in those music productions that are notorious for extreme stereo broadening (e.g. current EDM songs).
Incidentally, it should not be misleading that the impedance of the NDH 20 on the paper is relatively high. In practice, its high sensitivity ensures a good fit even with low-power headphone amplifiers, such as smartphones & Co.
One last word about sound insulation: Excellent! There is no other way to describe the positive impression that NDH 20 makes on me in this regard. I really like both the high attenuation of outside noise and the low penetration of the heard sound.
The NDH 20 can be used here
The Neumann company sees the area of application of the NDH 20 in various studio functions; be it in the monitoring of recordings, their editing or mixing, as well as in mixing on a PA. In fact, its strong isolation from outside noise makes it a well-functioning tool even in noisy environments; right up to sound reinforcement. Due to its analytical sound character, the NDH 20 can undoubtedly serve well in all of these listening situations. Anyone who has got used to the restrained sound of the Neumann may also learn to appreciate it as hi-fi headphones and; thanks to the folding mechanism and high sound insulation, even as a high-quality companion for on the go.
