Leaving out creates problems, but brings opportunities
After the tech world choked briefly when Apple retired the analog mini jack with the iPhone 7; many of us have now gotten used to the iPhone 8 that some adapters have to be stowed in our backpacks and jackets. There is something elegantly thin or inelegant chunky and while Apple, the “gods of usability”; simply hushed up the fact that listening to music and charging batteries never happens; a manufacturer finally comes around the corner who – at least with the Rayz Plus; simply integrate a charging socket and solves sudden problems that did not previously exist.
Of course, a purely digital audio transfer from smartphone to handset also has a lot of advantages: the headphone manufacturer itself can handle the difficult conversion from digital to analog. Or you can integrate all sorts of clever functions – keyword “smart devices”.
Almost like a native Apple product
This also applies to Pioneers, who worked closely with Apple and as a result want to put in-ears in our ear canals; which not only have active noise cancellation, but also a lot more thanks to the app. The free “Rayz” app greets you with well-made animations and first measures your own ears; it calibrates itself so that the headphones can respond more individually.
Unfortunately, Pioneer doesn’t tell us how and what he’s doing there. Nevertheless, after firmware updates and calibration, we can – at least to some extent – adapt the Rayz Plus to our own needs. But even after the latest firmware update (V 2.8.4), my favorite app is still missing, because Pioneer still does not understand “favorite app” as that of the user, but that of the manufacturer, and that is either Apple Music, the Rayz app or the Onkyo HF player. Unfortunately, there is no trace of apps like Spotify or Deezer. That is a shame and tarnishes the really successful overall impression.
Fortunately, there is nothing to complain about when processing the Rayz Plus – it is neat and the mix of materials works well: there is graphite-colored metal on the plug, the remote, and the listeners themselves. If you don’t like this, you can still choose between bronze, black, and rose gold, whereby the last two variants are only available directly from Apple. If you are flirting with the cheaper version (i.e. the Rayz without Plus), you have to choose between black and white.
Delete Me. Out.
I stand on the platform, I hear a plane above me, and to my right two women are talking quite loudly because they have to fight against all the noise. Well, then let’s say: “Take this, you noise, you!” I activate the noise canceling of the Rayz Plus and I hear … still something; this is of course wanted and luckily enough noise components are allowed to pass through so as not to feel too isolated. Low-frequency parts are filtered well, so the passenger becomes a small model airplane, the squeaking of the incoming train remains uncomfortable as before, but is significantly quieter and higher, and the voices of the two women are a little bit muffled but are still understandable.
You notice very quickly: The “intelligent” noise-canceling does not try to swing the really big filter lobe but uses it more carefully than an over-ear. So if you prefer absolute silence, you have to “listen” to other headphones.
Practical: The HearThru function activates microphones so that the pilot’s weather forecast or the train driver’s announcement can be focused and the “Smart Mute” function works like a classic noise gate. The microphones are automatically muted as soon as your own voice is paused, background noises are then not transmitted during calls. so that the pilot’s weather forecast or the train driver’s connection announcement can be heard in a focused manner and the “Smart Mute” function works like a classic noise gate. Where the bass has curls
The Rayz Plus is not one thing: tame. Pioneer gives the headphones a tuned lifestyle sound; that is, a fat bass foundation with a powerful basic tone and warm sound character. They never sound neutral, but those who still want to tame the frequencies can intervene with the equalizer from the Rayz app. There are five presets to choose from, but only “User-defined” can logically be changed.
But averaged enough. How do the Rayz Plus do when we let it go on our test tracks? First of all: there is not much to complain about Querbeet, it is almost everything fun; even if I have to tame bass bombs by EQ because they push too much for my taste. But that’s always personal listening preference; in this case, it comes from a person over 40 who grew up with the 80s and 90s sound aesthetics. This is how older electronica numbers sound like modern; intimate acoustic numbers but lack a little bit of gloss, and in general; the Rayz would benefit from greater depth and transparency with large stage arrangements.
