Scope of delivery, design & functions

In addition to the headphones, the scope of delivery also includes a screw adapter on a large jack plug and an unpadded plastic storage bag with a drawstring. That is clear, but OK for this price range. The design of the closed, circumaural Presonus headphones is just as simple as the scope of delivery. Clear forms and black / silver coloring have been used to implement a timeless design. On the other hand, the HD9 lacks recognition value for my taste.

Its permanently installed cable has a length of just under 3 m and is terminated by a 3.5 mm plug. The HD9 has 45 mm neodymium drivers that deliver 1,800 mW. And this with an average impedance measured by us of just under 44.6 ohms. The Presonus headphones have all the prerequisites to be considered ‘loud’. This is great for use on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops. What reads great on paper is the frequency response of the test candidate. It ranges from super deep 10 Hz up to impressive 26 kHz.

Processing & handling

The quality of the workmanship is good. The screws on the built-in joints indicate that service-friendly was thought of here. The contact surfaces of the plugs and the adapter are gold-plated to prevent corrosion. The ear pads are interchangeable.

The manufacturer promises us a high level of comfort. In fact, the HD9 is still relatively comfortable to wear over a long period of time. This is mainly because his ear pads nestle softly against the ears. After wearing it for a long time, however, the ears start to sweat under the synthetic leather. And the contact pressure could also be a little less for my taste. That would certainly not be a problem, since the Presonus only weighs 310 g.

The earpieces can be tilted on two axes and additionally rotated by 180 °. So the headphones can be worn flexibly as well as folded to a very small pack size. If necessary, the earcups can be turned outwards. The headphones are also wonderfully suitable for recording and even DJs and live engineers should like this feature. Because having an ear free to be able to have conversations with the artist or listening to the hall sound can be really practical. Last but not least, the size adjustment of the headgear is rasterized so that the last comfortable adjustment can be called up again immediately. In terms of handling, the HD9 does better for me than when it comes to comfort.

Sound character & areas of application

In fact, the playback signal from the headphones appears “clean” and precise when you first hear them. On closer listening, however, it becomes clear that the HD9 has problems with deep sub-bass components. If they are not turned down by EQ in advance, they wash out the overall sound of the headphones, so they affect the mapping of other frequency components. It is positive that a certain presence of the upper mids ensures high speech intelligibility. This benefits pop productions and, of course, spoken language.

The top end of the HD9 balances on the edge from “sharp” to “silky”. This means that the headphones can certainly serve well in mixing situations when it comes to assessing the level components of a mix. If high signal components sound too sharp on the HD9, you can confidently lower them. Due to its wide frequency response, the output material sounds wonderfully open up to the super high range. On the way there, only the now almost obligatory boost at 10 kHz – depending on the production – ensures a “dose” listening experience in this frequency range. However, since this is not always the case with all intercepted professional audio productions, this feature of the HD9 can be booked with a little benevolence under the item “analytical monitoring”.

That means:

The vividness of the playback dynamics of the HD9 is exemplary for this price range. Transients are unwashed by him in the different frequency ranges, although not particularly powerfully. The stereo impression of the HD9 is just as good, especially in current rock and pop music productions, as is the depth of the signal components. In both aspects, the headphones benefit from its wide frequency response and especially from its openness in the highs. The more transparent and differentiated the audio production to be listened to, the better I like the HD9. So, in my opinion, he trumps great with classical recordings.
