THX Spatial Audio can be activated here to enjoy surround sound, and fundamental improvements such as bass boost or audio normalization can be set. There is also a 10-band EQ with ready-made profiles, and user-defined settings can also be saved.

The pull-out microphone can also be adjusted using the software. In addition to the volume, the sensitivity can be adjusted, and “listening in” can be switched on. In addition, noise suppression, volume normalization, and voice quality that is supposed to filter noise can be activated. All of these settings can be saved in profiles. If you then switch from the PC to another system, the settings of the headset that are currently active are retained.

The operation of the headset itself is limited to a volume wheel and a button to activate spatial audio. If you pull out the microphone, you will find a mute button there, which, when activated; draws a red circle of light around the microphone.

Quality

On the head, the Kraken Ultimate makes a very high-quality impression. The headset, which weighs a good 390 grams, is obviously designed for longer sessions. The ears are completely covered by the oval ear pads, even for glasses wearers. In order to keep a cool head, the ear pads are filled with cold gel. If, and this is not a recommendation, the headset involuntarily leaves the head out of frustration; you can rest easy: the frame is made of aluminum, and the headband is made of stainless steel. The Kraken Ultimate not only makes a high-quality impression but also a very stable one.

Sound

With the standard EQ profile, the Kraken Ultimate sounds okay, but unfortunately not anymore. Neither thick basses come through, nor do clear highs. This may be a problem for those who do not use the headset on the PC with the software but on another device, such as a console. It gets better if you click through the EQ presets in the Synapse software. Here we find preset sound adjustments for games, films,s, and music. A change from “standard” to “music” while listening to it is not only perceptible acoustically, but also visually: low frequencies are raised and the highs open.

While the first impression of the Kraken Ultimate is still “standard”, Razer shows with the software that the headphones can sound really good! Provided you use Synapse and are not afraid to click through the frequency bands yourself. This is the only way to ultimately elicit a good sound from the ultimate octopus, if desired with thick bass, clear highs, or, if you like, with a completely natural, balanced sound.

The built-in microphone can be pulled out of the left handset and wonderfully bent into the desired position. If you want to hear yourself through the headset, switch on “listening in”. Noise fan or playing music in the background, you can activate a noise reduction, which actually very well extinguishes everything that is not a voice. But unfortunately, you can hear that too: the more the noise reduction has to intervene, the worse the speech quality becomes, although it always remains understandable.

Gaming practice

How does Razers Kraken Ultimate do in practice? Of course, we wanted to know that and started on our gaming PC “Darksiders II”. So while we fight as death through the game, we keep switching to the Synapse software and adjusting the sound, whether through the equalizer or bass boost. If the right settings are found, the Kraken Ultimate sounds good while accompanying the apocalyptic rider through his campaign. Both music, sound effects, and voices are really “bold” to the listeners.

However, if you want to connect the gaming headset to your game consoles, you have to face a few serious restrictions: On the Xbox One, you can enjoy the lighting, whoever expects sound will be disappointed. But the Kraken Ultimate is also a PC headphone; if you only gamble on Microsoft’s console, you should take a closer look at the Razer Kraken for Xbox One. Incidentally, Sony’s Playstation 4 recognizes the headset immediately, even if the volume wheel remains inoperative; these settings must then be made via the PS4 itself.

The Nintendo Switch also recognizes the headset right away and here the volume wheel can also be used again. Of course, spatial audio can no longer be activated on all consoles. The two-meter-long USB cable would also be somewhat restrictive: Those who have their consoles under a large television usually play at a distance from the picture. USB, unfortunately, has to be connected directly to the console; but with the mini-jack on the controller, you are much more flexible.
