Scope of delivery
In the small white cardboard box, we find the handset itself, the charging case, three pairs of stabilizing attachments and three pairs of silicone ear pads (each in sizes S, M, L), a charging cable from USB-C to -A, and the obligatory smorgasbord of short instructions and warranty conditions. The medium-sized ear and stabilization attachments are preinstalled, but it is noticeable that they are a good bit shorter compared to the ear tips of a Sony WF-1000XM3 (for testing). Thus, the attachments do not reach as deeply into the ear canal, which may give some people a “looser” fit. Fortunately, there are numerous replacement fittings from third-party providers.
You may not look at the tiny ones, but the Buds + are among the True Wireless In-Ears, which with a whopping eleven hours (manufacturer’s information) are currently one of the most enduring mini headphones. Only the Creative Outlier Gold (for testing) outperforms our test candidate with 14 hours.
In the practical test, the headphones lasted even longer: They played for eleven hours and 22 minutes with just one battery charge. Even if this of course depends on several factors such as volume, signal strength, or temperature – this staying power is top! Then the Buds + want to go back into the little black case to refuel. The case does this only once, so we get a total of about 22 hours of runtime, although Samsung naturally also thought of a quick charge function: just insert three minutes and we have another hour to listen to our favorite podcasts. One more word about the case: It can be powered both via USB and wirelessly, whereby the quick charge time via Qi takes longer, according to the manufacturer.
As with the AirPods (for testing) from Apple, the Galaxy Buds + can be coupled similarly comfortably. The prerequisites are that the smartphone is a Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 +, and S20 Ultra 5G with a reasonably current Android operating system (7.1.1 or higher) and the “SmartThings” app installed. Then – and only then – a pop-up window appears, which accompanies us through the initial setup.
With all other mobile phones, the connection works very traditionally: remove the earphones from the housing, open the Bluetooth menu of the phone and select “Galaxy Buds +”.
The In-Ears use Bluetooth 5.0 and reached a wireless range of almost 34 meters in our test (free field); in the apartment, it was over after about 9 meters. In terms of codecs, however, we would have expected more. The Buds + thus support the same codecs as the previous model: SBC, AAC, and the in-house Samsung Scalable Codec. Due to the lack of a Samsung smartphone, we were, unfortunately, unable to consider this in this test.
It is also a shame that the Galaxy Buds +, as originally claimed by Samsung, are not multipoint-capable.
App connection via iOS and Android
The fact that smart devices naturally need an adequate control center in today’s world is now a good thing. It is extremely gratifying if the manufacturer also thinks of the users of the competition because Samsung also offers a suitable app for the Galaxy Buds + for the Apple warehouse. The functionalities are almost the same on both systems: The iOS app lacks the “Notifications” function, which allows content from various apps to be read aloud.
What is missing, both on iOS and all Android devices that are not from Samsung: Is the special game mode; that should reduce latencies to such an extent that the delay between image and sound is barely noticeable. And also the shortcut for Spotify can be activated via the lab function; which simply starts the app by pressing the touch surface of the in-ears, Samsung Galaxy S20 is reserved for users. We can only hope that Samsung will unlock both functions for everyone else in the near future. Otherwise, there is a headphone find function and of course, an EQ wheel that contains six preset equalizer presets – from “Normal” to “Bass Boost”. Unfortunately, you cannot create your own presets.
In terms of sound, the manufacturer promises a “wide-ranging, lively sound in the treble and bass range” for which AKG’s acoustic specialists are responsible. And unlike the predecessors, the new Buds + are equipped with a double driver system; which is supposed to deliver exactly that sound aesthetic through a woofer and a tweeter.
When listening to our Spotify playlist, we initially don’t notice any gross blunders. The Buds + show quite unspectacular, which is not a drawback. The two drivers per side create a clearer representation of the lows, mids, and highs, which benefits the overall clarity.
Finally, Samsung also manages to resolve the narrow left-right staggering of instruments in the room quite well; even if the depth of the room is not particularly impressive.
In conclusion, it can be said that the middle frequency range; in particular, has a pronounced musicality; and this time there is no complaining about heights that are too “crispy”, the Buds + are perfectly fine.
Finally, we rate the quality of the conversation as good to very good. Depending on the strength of the ambient noise, our counterpart always attested to clear speech intelligibility; even if the voice of the Buds wearer was sometimes described as “a little faded” or “washed out”.
