Best Sennheiser HD 4.50BTNC Black Friday And Cyber Monday

The processing is, as usual from Sennheiser, of high quality, optically equally elegant and modern. The length-adjustable headband and the rotating ear cups have comfortable synthetic leather upholstery, which can even be replaced in the case of the ear pads. For this purpose, the construction can be folded in order to be stowed away in the supplied carrying bag to save space. Due to the good fit, the resulting comfort is high and should not interfere even on long trips.

Technically, the HD 4.50BTNC uses Bluetooth 4.0 and offers a possible pairing via NFC. The runtime is high thanks to a 600 mAh lithium battery with up to 19 hours of runtime (25 hours without noise canceling), so that you can also comfortably manage long-haul flights. If that’s not enough, you can also operate the headphones with the supplied cable.

Practice

In addition to the good comfort, I am also impressed by the operation. On the side of the right auricle is the on / off switch, which also initiates pairing without NFC. Once paired, the last connection is quickly re-established after switching on. With the next movable switch, you can start and stop music playback and coordinate calls. To do this, you can use this control element to jump between the titles and even rewind, although this does not really work reliably. Redialing and calling a voice-controlled call function are also possible via the button. Finally, there are two subtle switches that control the playback volume.

The free “CapTune” app has additional extras for iOS and Android. It not only offers transport functions, but is also an attractive player with playlists and support from Tidal, AirPlay, and DLNA. There is also a multi-band equalizer in different visualizations and with automatic level compensation as well as bass and treble boosters. There is also a nice spectrum display, which unfortunately is too low in contrast. You can also playfully find a preferred EQ setting in the soundcheck area through AB comparisons, which you can usefully save.

Noise-canceling

As a closed, well-fitting, and padded over-ear system, the HD 4.50BTNC initially scores with effective passive damping of ambient noise. Conversely, despite the high possible level, neighbors in the seats should not be disturbed. The active noise canceling, dubbed “NoiseGuard” by Sennheiser, cannot be regulated further and can only be switched off if necessary. However, this requires a cumbersome key combination in Bluetooth mode; which actually hardly enables fast communication with the surroundings when the headphones are on. The same action works much easier in wired mode by using the on / off switch.

In use, there is a permanent shielding from static and low-frequency noise, which creates an improved relaxation room; which provides soothing silence even without music on the train or plane – especially in a sitting position. At the same time, the signal-to-noise ratio is improved when listening to music; so that quiet dynamic ranges are better worked out. Ambient noise thus becomes significantly quieter, although higher-frequency noise and speech sometimes penetrate the rather intensive but not annoying shielding – particularly relevant when there is no music.

Speaking of which: there are two operating modes in cable operation. The passive mode always works and acts as a safety net in the event of an empty battery. If, on the other hand, battery power is available, noise-canceling can be activated. In this active mode, you can also hear how the electronics intervene beautifully in the playback and help the system to more pressure and bass.

Sound

The sound impression of the HD 4.50BTNC is convincing. On the technical side, there is still a deduction for iOS users. For more sophisticated music playback via Bluetooth; Sennheiser unfortunately only offers the aptX HD Codec, which provides better sound quality under Android with higher data rates. On the other hand, AAC would be required for corresponding tasks under iOS. Since this codec is not taken into account, the HD 4.50BTNC switches back to SBC. And while we’re at it: the aptX Low Latency Codec would have been a nice encore for lip-sync movie enjoyment.

Nevertheless, the headphones on my iPhone 8 delivered a consistently coherent and fairly neutral sound image; which ranges from deep bass to fine details in the higher frequencies. I would describe the results as balanced and good across genres; although the focus here is not on complete neutrality, but rather prettied listening fun – a legitimate way for a device that was designed for mobile use.

The powerful HD 4.50BTNC is particularly impressive in the bass range. It delivers tonality, dynamics, and definition in equal measure without falling out of the role with superfluous overemphasis. In the deep bass, he remains in a neutral EQ setting but still provides the necessary information.

The listener reproduces the mid-range equally dynamically with the necessary details and provides a good basis for all instruments and voices. For this purpose, it provides a certain abundance that makes rock and pop sound full.

After all, the heights are also shown beautifully open and without hardness. The numerous details ensure a wide stereo stage, provided the source material provides it.
