In addition to the in-ears, the box of the Sennheiser IE 40 PRO also contains three pairs of silicone ear tips in various sizes and a pair of memory foam ear tips. A cleaning tool and a small transport case are also included. However, I think that the manufacturer should not have saved it at this point. Because the supplied mini earpieces and the cleaning tool only fit into the mini pouch, then it’s over. The empty case is too small for the headphones including the cable.
Form, color, function
Best Sennheiser IE 40 PRO (Clear) Black Friday – The Sennheiser in-ears are relatively flat. The design is dominated by curved shapes. In addition to the black version tested here, the IE 40 PRO is also available with a transparent housing. There are sufficiently strong kink guards at all strategically important points. The cable is detachable for easy transportation and easy maintenance. It is immediately noticeable that the connectors are firmly seated, but are not as difficult to remove from the housing as the connectors of the MMCX connector system. Thumbs up.
Innovative is the possibility to adjust the in-ears to achieve better bass reproduction. The length of the earpieces is variable and can be adjusted to the length of the ear canal. There are two grid positions available, where the earmold can be snapped into place.
Inside the IE 40 PRO, a newly developed 10 mm broadband converter is used. We can be curious whether the sound of the in-ears will actually come across as more powerful and precise than that of its competitors. The special, slightly vibrating membrane of the IE 40 PRO is intended to intensify this effect.
Technology in numbers
The dynamic converters reproduce audio in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 18 kHz. The transmission range on paper is therefore slightly limited in height, as the human ear can usually hear up to 20 kHz. The impedance of 19.4 ohms ensures a good fit of the in-ears with bodypack transmitters and low-power headphone amplifiers. So musicians and DJs can use the IE 40 PRO in almost every imaginable live setup. The drivers of the IE 40 PRO equipped with neodymium magnets deliver a maximum sound pressure of 110.4 dB SPL that we measured. These button headphones can put immense pressure on you. According to the manufacturer, the IE 40 PRO attenuates external noise by 26 dB.
Soundscapes
First things first: The sub-bass of these in-ears is phenomenal. Especially if the position of the earmolds is chosen so that they extend a little further into the ear than usual. In the middle, the sound is characterized by a great deal of detail. Among other things, this ensures high intelligibility. To be able to speak of a balanced sound, the sound of the IE 40 PRO is clearly too sharp in the treble. I expected more restraint here. However, s and such sound, as well as cymbal parts of the drums, occasionally cause hissing, depending on the monitor mix.
But at the same time, the area of the top heights is so well represented that the sound of the headphones appears open and even “airy”. This was not to be expected due to the limited frequency range. In practice, they prove that the headphones are loud (and I really mean LOUD), as well as that they deliver no or at least acceptable levels of distortion even at high playback levels. The manufacturer has not promised too much here. The reproduced signal has a very dynamic effect on me and maps transients in detail. The stereo impression is not the least due to the tonal openness in the highs. For the same reason, the subjective signal resolution is convincing and the depth of graduation is gaining in dimension.
Good for monitoring?
The ergonomic shape of the IE 40 PRO ensures that the monitoring in-ears have a good fit straight away. For use on stage, it is not only important for button headphones that they are comfortable. It is almost more important that they are also tight enough (or can even be attached). With its bendable wire-reinforced cable ends that can be adapted to the shape of the ear, the IE 40 PRO does just that: a secure fit. It is no accident that the cable is carried over the ear so that the pinna can act as a strain relief. The cable of the In-Ears is flexible and, thanks to its length of 125 cm, can be stowed well under clothing without being unruly or having to survive a lot. The soft cable jacket reduces rustling,
Weighing 18 g, these headphones are light enough to be worn comfortably over a longer period of time without feeling pressure on the ear. The IE 40 PRO is also convincing when it comes to damping outside noise. This is especially true if the earmolds are adjusted so that they reach deep into the ear canal. It is definitely amazing what difference the small difference in length of just 1-2 mm makes for the sound.
Expectations
Best Sennheiser IE 40 PRO Clear Black Friday – The Sennheiser IE 40 PRO meet almost all professional expectations that I placed on them during testing. Your seat is comfortable and safe. Their handling is comfortable, from the easy-to-use plug connections to the adjustment of the earmolds. And also the ability to adapt to the depth of the ear canal shows that simple solutions can sometimes have an immense effect. In terms of sound technology, the IE 40 PRO offers a detailed sound stage, which ranges from impressive sub-basses, through detailed mids to a surprisingly open-sounding high-frequency range.
The sound of the headphones should above all be precise when listening quietly and loudly, says Sennheiser. This description is actually correct. On the other hand, I disagree with the predicate “balanced sound”. Because for fatigue-free listening for several hours, I would like in my monitor mix for the IE 40 PRO the frequency components above 8-9 kHz would be reduced by a few dB with a cow tail filter. But now and then sibilants can come to the fore a little.
