Curtain up
And, of course, it was only a matter of time before Sennheiser gave the popular Momentum True Wireless this added feature. So much is anticipated – the functional update that True Wireless 2 now wants to conquer the market has paid off.
Scope of delivery
The charging box is covered with fabric, the two in-ears (IPX4 rating), four silicone earmolds in sizes XS, S, M, and L, a short USB-A to USB-C- Charging cable, and two brief instructions in different languages. It is a little sad that Sennheiser has not added any foam tips, but even without the silicone tips seal well.
Comfort
As with the predecessors, the in-ears are first inserted into the ears and fixed with a slight twist. Here you should really work precisely, because if they don’t sit perfectly, the bass area goes there, which then ripples only very thinly.
The overall comfort is good, but they are not the slimmest True Wireless In-Ears. Children and adults with very small earcups will also have their passport problems. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Buds + (for the test), they look a bit beefier, compared to the massive Sony WF-1000XM3 (for the test), the Sennheiser literally nestles into the ear. Depending on how close your hat is to your ears, these in-ears could create an uncomfortable feeling of pressure.
Battery life
The manufacturer specifies seven hours with just one battery charge (without noise-canceling switched on). We cannot confirm this in our tests, we only manage six hours and 40 minutes at a moderate volume of approx. 60% (Pi times thumb). But nominal values always differ from practice because many factors play a role. Together with the noble-looking charging box, we then get a little over 27 hours, whereby a complete charging cycle takes about one and a half hours and ten minutes in the case giving almost one and a half hours of runtime. This puts these in-ears in the upper midfield, a runtime such as that offered by the Samsung Galaxy Buds + or the Padmate Pamu Slide (for testing) is not achieved.
Control
The operation remains the same compared to the predecessor. Here, the two silver touch surfaces allow detailed control of all kinds of events: 1x tap left and playback pauses or continues, 2x tap jumps one track, 3x tap back a track, and holding it down reduces the volume. On the right side, you call up the voice assistant with a push, the transparent hearing function de / activated with a double tab, the active noise canceling is finally triggered with a triple tab, and holding down increases the volume.
When listening to calls, both hearing sides react in the same way: one press accepts and ends calls, and two presses reject calls. It all works fine and reliably, even if the actions are carried out with a delay of approx. 1.5 seconds. Of course, you can completely change these actions and configure them to your own taste. But this requires the free iOS and Android app …
Smart control
This app serves as a kind of hub for all Sennheiser headphones that can connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth. So if you have several Momentum or PCX headphones, Smart Control offers you quite comfortable management of these models. It is not only possible to carry out firmware updates here, but it is also possible to reassign the touch surface. A simple EQ lets you tune the sound, the setting “Sidetone” or “Sidetone” mixes your own voice during calls, so you avoid the effect of loudspeakers, which normally occurs when wearing headphones. Other important features of the app are the auto call answering, which lets you answer calls automatically as soon as you take the right handset out of the charging case, and the smart pause function.
Transparent hearing
A transparency mode has become part of the good tone with many wireless close-up ear sounders because it mixes outside noise with it to get more of your surroundings. This also applies to the Momentum True Wireless 2, which even lets you decide via the app whether the music will automatically pause if you activate this function via a double tab. In practice, this works perfectly as expected, but it is striking that this is accompanied by a very quiet, but still noticeable prickling and crackling as well as a slight background noise.
Noise-canceling
Sennheiser himself writes that the microphones on the outside mainly reduce low-frequency ambient noise. In fact, they do, but despite the very good passive damping, complete isolation is never achieved. Particularly praiseworthy is the fact that switching on the ANC mode neither increases the background noise nor interferes negatively with the sound.
