Sennheiser RS 175 Black Friday Review 2023
Controls charging station and wireless headphones
In the pictures below we see the controls on the headphones on the left and next to them the charging station with the controls. The buttons for louder / quieter are only available on the headphones, whereas the bass button and the virtual surround button are available on the station and on the headphones.
The volume buttons on the headphones have a plus and a minus sign on them (with depth). This is very practical because you can feel which button you are currently pressing.
Range
The range of the RS 175 is specified as 100 meters. This information applies to optimal conditions, ie line of sight. I did a practical test in a three-story apartment building in which WLAN runs over a Fritzbox with 2.4 and 5 GHz. There was no interference from the WLAN. The radio headphone transmitter is in the attic. Here I was able to move freely without interference.
Even on the floor below, there were no problems in all rooms. Dropouts in the kitchen on the ground floor. The kitchen is farthest from the station. The reception in the living room was perfect again. In contrast to an analog radio headphones, the sound fails completely when the connection breaks. With analog models, on the other hand, the sound is scary if you move too far.
Comfort
The RS 175 is a closed radio headphone with ear pads made of synthetic leather. The closed shape means less outside noise. There are four models of the RS series, all of which have synthetic leather ear cushions, except the RS 185, which is made of velour and has a semi-open construction. A comparison table of the models can be found at the end of the article.
The ear cups of the RS 175 are attached to joints that allow horizontal rotation, which means that the headphones adapt very well to the head. Furthermore, the ear cups are still attached vertically in a joint. These two joints ensure that the headphones adapt very well to the head. Of course, the radio headphones are also height-adjustable or can be adapted to the shape of the head.
The ear pads are pleasantly soft and comfortable to wear. There are two additional cushions on the inside of the headband so that the headband does not press at the top. I used the headphones for several hours a day and found them to be comfortable. Of course, I sometimes stopped for a few minutes when I took a break from work.
Sound
I have heard various music genres. A lot of rock/pop and electro but also quieter film soundtracks. For my old RS 125, the bass was not enough for me. With the RS 175, however, the bass is just right and the music sounds stronger. I like this very much.
Extra bass
For those who want more bass, there is an extra bass button on the headphones and also on the transmitter. Especially when playing and in movies, this bass boost gives explosions and effects a proper bass boost. When playing Dota 2, all the sounds sounded, for example, much more powerful than with the older Sennheiser HDR 125.
Virtual surround sound
There are two different modes for virtual surround sound, LI and HI. These modes can be activated on the station or the button on the ear cup of the radio headphones. Logically, this mode is not really suitable for music, but rather for games and films.
