Scope of delivery
The list of things that are not included with the new edition of the Shure SE846 is significantly smaller than the list of their immense scope of delivery. Contrary to the previous accessory package, the previously included external volume control is no longer included. That is not a problem. It is a shame, however, that the cleaning sticks that were included are no longer on board. The scope of delivery of these in-ears reads like a wish list for button headphone fans.
At the start there is now a cable with a Bluetooth receiver and remote control for smart devices. In addition, the standard delivered Kevlar-reinforced original cable and other previously included accessories are included. These are a conventional cable with remote control, a storage box, a transport case, a plug adapter to 6.35 mm; an airplane adapter, a charging cable, a cable clip, … I take a short breath … a cleaning cloth, nine pairs of earmolds, and a waterproof, metal pillbox with sound-varying sound tubes. What more do you want?
Design & processing
Nothing has been changed on the headphones themselves. This means that even with the Bluetooth version of the SE846; the in-ear fan still encounters four high-resolution drivers with an integrated low-pass filter; gold-plated plug contacts, sufficiently stable kink protection, and space-saving MMCX plugs, which ensure that the exchangeable cables are firmly seated to care. At 1.45 meters, the audio cable is still the perfect length; so that it can be carried out discreetly under clothing for use on stage or for private use while still guaranteeing sufficient freedom of movement.
Functions
The sound isolation feature spoils the user of the SE846 with a damping of the outside noise by 37 dB. Another key feature is the interchangeability of the sound tubes inside the in-ears. By changing them, the frequency image of the button headphones changes significantly. In this way, the sound of the Shure SE846 can be adapted to the personal listening taste; or to the requirements of the respective area of application.
The highlight of the Bluetooth output is of course the Bluetooth function of the headphones. It is not realized by receivers in the small headphone housings, but by a special cable. There is a small Bluetooth receiver in the middle of this cable. The cable ends then pass the received sound on to the in-ears. Even if this solution is not completely wireless; the player (in this case, the transmitter) no longer has to be located close to the user’s body.
Handling
The SE846 are still very good in the ear. They cannot be changed as quickly as conventional in-ears, which are simply plugged in. But thanks to the sufficiently rigid but bendable cable ends, the over-ear cable routing provides a very good hold.
The remote control installed on the Bluetooth cable (which bears the cryptic name RMCE-BT1); essentially corresponds to the well-known remote control of the Shure SE846. Contrary to the wired remote control, there is still a selection switch with which I as a user can choose between i-mode for smart iOS devices; and A-mode for Android-based devices. The maximum operating time of the internal lithium polymer battery is announced as a spoken English text when the headphones are switched on. That is practical.
Another difference is the remote control of the Bluetooth cable. It just “essentially” corresponds to that of the wired version. In contrast to this, the middle button has several different assignments. For the user, this means that they have to familiarize themselves with two different devices if they want to use both variants. As an example, it should only be mentioned here that the combination of double-clicking and holding the middle button once leads to Fast Forward (cable remote). Another time, this key combination starts the voice assistant (Bluetooth remote).
Sound
Technically speaking, the new Bluetooth extension works with the Bluetooth 4.1 standard. This makes it possible to connect up to two devices to the transmitter. Technically, however, the signal coding for Bluetooth transmission is somewhat disappointing. It is not done with a higher-quality aptX codec, but only with the standard SBC. The pressing question that immediately comes to my mind is: Can the first-class sound of the SE846 actually be transmitted with this codec? After all, these in-ears in cable mode sound – depending on the sound tube used – from brilliant; balanced to warm and convey not only immense spatial depth but also detailed bass and super-fine highs.
Unfortunately, the presumption of loss of impressive sound quality is confirmed in practice. With Bluetooth transmission, the bass range is less powerful, the mids are less pointed; the finely drawn highs of the wired transmission are far less impressive. In short, all those elements that make the sound of the SE846; so impressive to me are so weakened in Bluetooth mode that they otherwise almost sound excellent; and almost perfectly acting in-ears sound like ordinary headphones. That may not be a problem for stage use. However, these sound losses greatly reduce the enjoyment of hi-fi.
