Best Tascam TH-06 Black Friday Review
Scope of delivery, design, and materials
The scope of delivery of the Tascam TH-06 is super clear. In addition to the headphones themselves, this only includes a screwable 6.3 mm adapter, which is gold-plated and thus prevents corrosion and permanently ensures the best contact. The design of the headphones is classic and simple. Black and silver dominate its coloring. The entire design of the device appears clearly structured and timeless.
The over-ear design of the TH-06 is due to the oval ear pads that are not too bulky. Their foam fillings are surrounded by soft synthetic leather, the seams of which keep the upholstery in shape. A stainless steel frame and a precisely fitting seam keep the pads in place. Two plastic articulated arms grip the closed earpieces, which are not rotatable but can be swiveled through 180 ° so that they point outwards. The adjustment mechanism of the headband consists of a sheet steel rail on which a scale is engraved. The headband of the TH-06 is made of manganese. Therefore, despite its stability, it is flexible and comes with little weight. A synthetic leather cover encases the headband including generous padding.
The processing of the headphones is flawless. The ear pads are interchangeable, and the ends of the one-sided cable are reinforced with kink protectors. The permanently installed cable also has oxygen-free copper cables and is equipped with a gold-plated stereo mini jack plug. The fact that the headband and the end cap of the headband are made of plastic can be a thing of the past sale price.
Technology
Dynamic transducers work inside the earcups, whose 45 mm drivers are excited by powerful neodymium magnets. The audio transmission range extends from 10 Hz to 26 kHz and is therefore immense for this price range. The average impedance of the TH-06 is just over 45 ohms in a range that predestines it for many areas of application.
So that it can be operated not only on headphone amplifiers with decent performance but also on less powerful headphone preamps. The limit for this is the maximum possible sound pressure level of almost 100 dB SPL. All attention! According to Tascam, the TH-06 uses a technology that the manufacturer calls “Bass XL” and is said to deliver particularly low-distortion bass sound that reaches particularly deep and at the same time sounds “soft”.
Haptics & handling
The martial appearance of the Tascam TH-06 is deceptive because with a weight of hardly more than 250 g (without cable) it is a really light contemporary. Its feel is good for cheap headphones and its fit is comfortable. The size of the headband is infinitely variable, but once selected it is adjustable. The pressure on the headband is relatively shallow and yet it sits securely. This is possible because the headphones are so light. But also because the ears do not sweat under the soft cushions, the TH-06 is suitable for wearing when it takes a little longer.
The ear cups of the TH-06 can be turned by 180 °. This will please DJs, who can therefore only put on the headphones with an active ear cup. The days when DJs had to pinch their headphones between their ears and shoulders are definitely over when using the TH-06. The length of the non-removable cable is about 2.9 m long enough for DJs to have full freedom of movement.
Sound
Closed over-ear headphones sometimes have the problem that they boom when playing bass and sound rather blurred. In audio passages without too much bass, the TH-06 delivers concise, slightly sharp mids and an equally sharp-sounding treble profile. Speech and singing therefore tend to hiss slightly. As soon as lower frequencies come into play, the Tascam headphones show that they can convert them into the subbass range. However, the sound picture is not well balanced. Overall, there is a lack of tonal openness “upstairs” and “downstairs” is dominated by a frequency range in the basses that takes the overall sound from dimension.
Sure, in terms of volume, the TH-06 offers enormous reserves and even on weak preamps, it makes a lot of noise. And its acoustic isolation from the outside and the attenuation of outside noise are – as is naturally the case for closed-ear headphones – really good. In terms of dynamics and transients, the TH-06 cannot convince me any more than with its slightly washed-out sound.
The sharp mids mean that rock, alternative, and metal, in particular, can quickly become exhausting listening pleasure on these headphones. And unfortunately, the subjective signal resolution with these headphones depends heavily on the audio material. If there are strong bass components, they appear just as limited as the stereo impression and the perceived depth gradation. In terms of dynamics and transients, the TH-06 cannot convince me any more than with its slightly washed-out sound.
