Technics EAH-DJ1200 Black Friday Review
With the proven swivel mechanism, both capsules can be folded into the frame to save space for transport on the one hand and can be turned away from the ear on the other, a popular feature for one-sided monitoring. The joint is locked with a lever so that the EAH-DJ1200 maintains its set position even with violent head movements. The previous model missed the interchangeable cable that Technics takes into account with the new: The 1.5-meter long spiral or straight cable with a 1.2-meter length plus adapter, which is included in the scope of delivery, is connected via a mini jack socket below the right capsule. To prevent it from being pulled out accidentally, the connector is locked by turning it 90 degrees.
The processing
The flexible bracket including suspension and capsules of the EAH-DJ1200 was constructed entirely of plastic, but this does not detract from the robustness or high quality. The screw connections used exclusively to emphasize the high-quality standards.
A big shortcoming of the predecessor was the former soft synthetic leather, which was probably released from the foam by sweat. For the EAH-DJ1200 model, on the other hand, Technics uses somewhat harder and therefore more robust synthetic leather.
The comfort
The plastic construction pays off in weight because it weighs 233 grams without a cable. Even with the spiral cable connected, it does not increase significantly. He feels very comfortable on the head, which is also due to the soft headband with synthetic leather cover and the very lavishly padded sweat-repellent earpads.
The narrow headband, with which the headphones are also suitable for small head sizes, literally clings to the head, which gives security when it is put on. In addition, it presses the on-ear capsules to the ears without being intrusive and still giving the necessary support. Thanks to the lockable swivel mechanism, the capsules sit comfortably and securely even away from the ears.
The sound
For Technics, now an audiophile manufacturer, it was a matter of honor to prepare the EAH-DJ1200 primarily in terms of sound compared to its predecessor. For this purpose, the Japanese donate the newly developed powerful 40 mm drivers with CCAW voice coil, which play in frequency response between 8 and 30,000 hertz. However, the discontinued model even managed 5 Hertz. Even with the impedance of 45 ohms, it differs from the 32 ohms at that time. In contrast, it improves its nominal capacity from 1,500 to 2,500 mW, and the sensitivity of 106 dB / mW remains.
Although the technical data may reduce the euphoria at first, the sound image in the test is all the more exciting. His sound sounds very balanced and transparent. In Röyksopp’s “Eple” he shows in the first bars what he is capable of: reproducing concise beats with deep basses; on which in return brilliant heights with the bell-like lead sound can be seen. Even if the ears are completely overloaded by the volume, the headphones master all transients accurately and are razor-sharp – it pays off the larger nominal capacity.
The same with Moby’s “Rushing”: The interplay of dirty beats and the piano sounds very natural, tidy, and detailed. The well-balanced bass and the reserved mids, which, however, feel a little more prominent in the new model, give the highs the praised transparency without exaggerating.
Since the drivers are very close to the ear and the capsules lie on a large surface, they also shield well from the environment; which in loud environments requires a signal that is not relentlessly loud in order to cover the noise. But also at home and audiophile playback; the EAH-DJ1200 is predestined thanks to its very good depth grading and thus spatial imaging.
