The new JBL Charge 4 in the test: it is worth buying
The design
With a cylindrical design measuring 22 x 9.5 x 9.3 centimeters and weighing almost 1kg, the Charge 4 is available in 10 different colors.
The colors range from mustard yellow and teal, as well as other standard models in black or white. The loudspeaker has the protection class IPX7, ie it has an unspecified degree of dust protection and is absolutely waterproof.
You can immerse the Charge 4 up to one meter underwater for about 30 minutes, which is perfect as a speaker for the pool or for the quarry lake.
JBL’s Charge 4 battery life is about 20 hours, but the results vary depending on the volume and the mix of wired and wireless use.
The passive radiators emitting to the side help to create a greater feeling for the bass depth, and the system provides you with 30 watts and a frequency range from 60Hz to 20KHz.
Using a single, higher-quality driver offers a much better sound experience, even if it’s only mono.
The Charge 4, unfortunately, does not have a hands-free function, so all calls have to be made on your mobile phone.
With larger Bluetooth speakers it is now common that they do not have a hands-free function, but the Charge 4 is a kind of intermediate size, so I would have liked this function.
At the top of the control panel, there are buttons for power, pairing, and volume up / down as well as a play/pause button that jumps forward one track when pressed twice.
Oddly enough, there is no backward function. There is also a JBL Connect + button for linking to various other compatible JBL wireless speakers. You can connect more than 100 speakers together.
Sound quality
The Charge 4 does not disappoint on tracks with an intense sub-bass component, as it delivers a powerful deep bass clean and clear even at high volumes (and the loudspeaker can get quite loud for its size).
It sounds like the Charge 4 has a larger woofer – maybe not a subwoofer, but definitely a capable woofer. The heights are reproduced very clearly.
For a track with far less deep bass in the mix, the Charge 4 gives a better impression of the general sound characteristics.
Charge 4 gives the drums a little more depth without humming.
Subbass synth hits that puncture the beat are delivered with solid depth, although there is no subwoofer.
It delivers a powerful sound, and even with songs with vocals, the vocals are clear – clean, and without additional hissing sounds.
Classic tracks have a pleasant additional low midrange and bass boost and give the present a very balanced sound.
The additional bass depth may not please purists, but overall they give a good mix and do not overshadow the higher-quality elements.
Our conclusion on Charge 4
The JBL Charge 4 is an excellent option for those who want a waterproof, powerful, portable Bluetooth speaker in a medium-sized frame.
The Charge 4 sounds absolutely great for a mono speaker at this price. Its solid workmanship is waterproof and not very big despite its performance.
I think the bass depth is impressive here, especially thanks to the double passive emitters that provide powerful pressure. The only two stumbling blocks are the lack of a hands-free function and the fact that the speaker is mono.
There are of course other options in this price range – Bose SoundLink Color II and Sony SRS-XB31.
If you want it to be a bit bigger, the JBL Xtreme 2 is a real powerhouse, but it costs almost twice as much as the Charge 4. For the size and the price, the Charge 4 is still highly recommended by me.
