Even if the accessories of the LCD-1 do not look impressive at first glance, they still convince when unpacking: In addition to the headphones themselves, only the detachable cable with jack adapter and a transport case form the scope of delivery. But a second look reveals that gold-plated contacts and supply lines, which are encased in the material jacket, are all testimony to quality.

As is typical for Audeze, the two audio cups are fed separately with the audio signal using two plugs. In the case of the LCD-1, however, the manufacturer does not rely on a mini XLR version, but uses stereo mini-jack plugs. What surprises me is that the headphones do not include any documentation, neither a quick start guide nor a data sheet.

In addition, the ear pads and headband are covered with soft lamb leather, which makes wearing the headphones very comfortable. Even long listening sessions are not a problem with these headphones. For large ear cups, the oval, rather narrow earpieces of the LCD-1 but less suitable. The cable length of 1.95 m should easily suffice for the majority of “serious” operations on the go. However, the cable is clearly too long for mobile use and to accommodate the cable under clothing. As a little treat, Audeze designed the stereo jack plugs to be inserted into the earcups. The associated sockets only pick up the signal that is the “right” one for them – that is, left or right. This eliminates the need for a left-right label on the interchangeable cable.

In the end, the sound counts

The image quality of the LCD-1 is so good that I have to listen twice at low playback volume; whether I am listening to sound from the headphones or whether it is a sound from the near-field monitors in front of me. This is also because the depth of the audio material reproduced by the LCD-1 is extremely differentiated. But don’t worry: its detailed sound comes into its own even at higher volumes.

The sound of the headphones is completely transparent and – typical of its open design – tamed in the bass. He makes sub-basses perceptible, but reserved. The lower mids are also more subtly represented. As a result, the rest of the mid-range moves significantly forward in perception. The highs are finely resolved without being harshly tonal or even conveying hissing. The LCD-1 presents a very solid stereo stage, which lacks a bit of “foundation” due to its conservative bass components in the center. Instead, the focus is on vocals and other instruments that are deflected into the center of the center. For these reasons, the LCD-1 should undoubtedly serve as an analysis aid for middle-range signals and vocal productions.
