The part of the Echo Buds protruding from the ear is relatively bulky. This makes comfort a question of taste. The listeners themselves quite securely turned in the auricle and in the ear canal – but I would not call them sports models. On the other hand, with less than eight grams per side and sweat and water resistance according to IPX4, they can be used for this application.
However, if you want to rely on the music and communication control directly on the device, the selection is less extensive. Two functions can be configured for each earplug: double-click, tap, and hold; Amazon probably avoided single-clicks due to possible incorrect operation. In both cases, the sensor surface first requires tapping, in which a disturbing noise is transmitted to the eardrum.
If you reserve one function for switching noise canceling and pass-through function (see below) and another for starting and pausing music playback, two functions remain. You then have to decide between volume control or possible title jumps. As a rule, the smartphone will be used additionally.
These functions are configured via the Alexa app, which also provides a three-band equalizer. Possible communication with just one earplug is sensibly solved. The automatic pausing of music playback when a listener is removed is also practical.
When it comes to battery power, the Echo Buds also deliver practical runtimes. The pure listeners last about five hours. The charging case extends the runtime to a maximum of 20 hours of operation, which can use to survive long trips. The case has a quick charge function and thus achieves two more hours of play with a 15-minute charge. The connection to the computer or to a power supply unit is made via micro USB.
Noise reduction
Noise-canceling was licensed from Bose. However, the circuit cannot be regulated; but it fulfills its purpose effectively. The intensity and configurability of competitor Sony WF-1000XM3 (for testing) don’t achieve here; but the creation of a relaxation area in noisier environments such as flights or train rides; in which static and low-frequency noise, in particular, is further reduced in addition to the already good passive external insulation.
For this purpose, the pass-through function offers the option of switching ambient sounds to your ears so that you can better perceive the environment and communicate. The intensity of this circuit can be adjusted in five stages via the app. It can be decided whether the noise reduction is switched off at the same time.
Sound
Ultimately, the most important thing is sound. Amazon uses two balanced armature drivers from Knowles for the Echo Buds – per side. For the electronics, the chip combination “Analog Devices ADAU1777” and “Realtek RTL8763B” was used; which is limited to the codecs SBC and AAC. Too bad, because aptX in every variant and LDAC fall under the table while enjoying music – especially not ideal for Android.
The sound itself is powerful, but a little too bass-heavy. The sound result cannot call an audiophile; which did not to be expected given the functional orientation and the price of around 130 euros. Rather, the Echo Buds see themselves as practical true wireless handsets for everyday use.
So the bass range is pretentious, but fortunately not too booming. For mobile use and the combination with modern genres, the tuning is suitable for lifestyle; although this imbalance, which continues into the existing but also too voluminous deep bass; is accompanied by masking effects in the higher frequency ranges. Nevertheless, voices and acoustic instruments still reproduced well in the middle and if necessary with appropriate proximity. But distorted rock guitars also sound fitting and rich in the ear canal.
Finally, the Echo Buds avoid annoying hardships in the heights, but, as expected; do not offer the silveriness and richness of detail of more expensive constructions. I would describe the dynamic behavior that can see, for example, in jazz and classical recordings as passable. After all, the Echo Buds are safe when it comes to mapping the stereo panorama and panning effects; but are lagging behind when it comes to spatial mapping compared to open constructions or even speakers.
