With its 224 g (without cable), the HD7 is a real lightweight. That is why it also manages with a pleasant, comparatively low contact pressure. Incidentally, almost 3 m of cable length ensures sufficient freedom of movement when using the HD7 in the home studio. Due to its low impedance (measured by us: below 39 ohms), the headphones are also suitable for enjoying music on smart devices on the go. But his cable is extremely long for this purpose. Since it is not interchangeable, it will probably be a hindrance in the subway or in sports.
Sound character & areas of application
Judging by the fact that the sound of the HD7 is described as “warm” and “natural” in advertising, it appears surprisingly high when you hear it for the first time. But first let’s take a look at the other end of the spectrum, the bass range. In the practical test, however, the bass and sub-bass parts are quite tame. The bass seems to me to be even less defined. It is a little disappointing.
Even when I am talking about accurate mids, I like to listen twice. In fact, the frequency response of the HD7 comes up with several boosts in this area. While the boost at 10 kHz is now standard, the pronounced boost at 6.3 kHz helps the assertiveness of instruments such as guitars and synthesizers. Another boost at 2.5 kHz ensures high speech intelligibility. This strong contouring of the frequency response does not enable the promised accurate mapping, but nevertheless enables a targeted assessment of voices and middle-weighted instruments, especially in full mixes. If you work with the sound of metal and alternative guitars, you can judge them cheaply with the HD7. However, due to the mid-boosts, this can also be exhausting for your hearing in the long run.
I really like the openness of the highs right into the super high range. Here the HD7 shows its best, transparent side. This also affects the subjective impression of the signal resolution and the perceived depth gradation. However, the Presonus headphones tend to be distorted with very dynamic music material.
