Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro Edition Black Friday
Contemporary dark mode
The limited Pro edition completely in black design looks more elegant and contemporary at first glance. Nowadays, everything is happy to be switched to “Dark Mode”: browser, operating system, professional app – so then the DT 880 Pro. Beyerdynamic opted for a matt finish on metal and plastic parts for the makeover: an industrial tech looks that appeals. The sturdy frame construction is ultra-durable, the usual Beyerdynamic quality. The pleasantly and extremely generously padded synthetic leather temples are just as beautifully finished as in the classic model and give good support, despite the approximately 300 grams. The sliding mechanism for size adjustment is also great and can be easily “lashed down” even on small heads.
The first striking difference to the gray-silver version is the ear pads. The processed velor and its inner padding are much firmer with the Black Edition. So the crumple zone is not that big anymore. In comparison, somewhat more intensive noise insulation is noticeable in the new model, although this is still moderate due to the semi-open construction. Ambient noises are still clearly perceptible.
Nothing has changed in the cable routing. It is firmly connected on the left side of the handset and runs via a robust spiral cable to the combined jack connection. For its 250 ohms, however, you should already have a somewhat more powerful headphone amplifier. The DT 880 Pro is not for weak-breasted smartphones, it can only display its quality on a monitor controller or a good mixer amp.
New tuning with more bass
Neutrality and a high degree of spatial imaging are the strengths of the DT-880 series and one reason why it has been a popular tool in the studio and among demanding hi-fi listeners for over 20 years. Nothing is pumped out here, thickened, and cheekily pushed, which is not available in the mix. Almost a little conservative – better said “beautiful” conservative in order to be able to assess a sound image, language tracks, and individual instrument tracks in a neutral manner.
Compared to the classic DT-880 model, however, the sound aesthetics of the Black Edition are quite different: there is a noticeable emphasis in the bass area, which is also due to the new ear pad design. Thus, the Black Pro Edition presents itself with a different overall tuning. The slight bass boost can be desired depending on the music style, for example in hip-hop or electronic music. However, it makes the sound analysis in typical problem areas of the mix a bit more difficult than with the classic model. The original version has a middle sound, which radiates more transparency and actually copes with every music style.
If you hear the classic DT 880 Pro in direct comparison, you will notice that the lower mids; and the frequencies above are represented more presently and directly than with the Pro Black Edition; whose bass reproduction slightly overshadows certain areas. In addition, with the black model at the highs around 10 kHz, you can feel a minimal boost that you have to like.
However, these are marginal differences – both models are not “fairer”.
A plus for the entire DT-880 series is the spatial mapping, with which sound images can be assessed very well in three dimensions.
