Apple Airpods Pro in the test: great comfort
Apple’s Airpods Pro outperformed the normal Airpods in every respect. If you are used to the latter, you have to get used to it a bit, because you no longer just hang the Airpods Pro loosely in the ear cups, but press them lightly into the ear canal. Small rubber surrounds provide the necessary support, as is common with most in-ear headphones. The Airpods Pro sits deeper in the ear than the very inconspicuous Airpods.
We find the comfort to be excellent: The Airpods Pro generally does not slip even during sporty, dynamic body movements, but still hardly press and does not produce any unpleasant side effects like some other in-ear headphones – in the form of strong pressure in the ear or distorted own noises. The Airpods Pro is a lot of fun for us. However, since each ear and ear canal is shaped differently, you can’t avoid trying the Airpods Pro yourself to find out how they fit you.
Quiet in the noise thanks to strong noise canceling
The reason for the change is obvious: Apple is opting for active noise cancellation (ANC) for the first time and does not want to counteract this with an overly open design (as is the case with Huawei’s Freebuds 3). The Airpods Pro should therefore close the ear or ear canal mechanically. ANC mostly uses manufacturers with over-ear headphones, this feature is rather rare in the true wireless segment. The top model in this area is Sony’s WF-1000XM3.
Active noise cancellation works very well. We tested it with loud aircraft noise (via YouTube) and assessed the reduction effect: the noise level is massively reduced. Bass frequencies are actually no longer audible, in the middle and high range there is still a quiet noise, which we no longer find annoying. At the latest when music is playing, you will no longer hear anything from your ambient noise. The difference to normal Airpods, which let street noise pass through almost unfiltered, is significant.
We also find the plug’s smart response strong: As soon as you take one headphone out of your ear, the other switches into the so-called transparency mode, which specifically transmits ambient noise. This means you can easily talk or hear announcements. This mode can be activated by pressing a button on the Airpods Pro even when the headphones are plugged in. There is also wearer detection for iPhone users, which automatically pauses or starts music – depending on whether you take one or both headphones out of your ear or put them back in. If you operate the Airpods on an Android phone, you, unfortunately, have to do without it.
Airpods Pro with great sound and long battery life in the test
Apple has also improved the sound for our taste. We already liked the normal Airpods: their sound is warm and entertaining, but a little too fuzzy and bassy. The Airpods Pro fixes this shortcoming. Compared to normal Airpods, the sound is clearer and more detailed in the treble, and more controlled in the bass. Voices are a little harder, not so soft, but more expressive. The Airpods Pro is more precise, but sometimes not as romantic as the normal Airpods. Overall, we like the sound a bit better, and overall very good. However, sound perception is sometimes subjective and can vary according to experience, taste, and physiognomy. However, we keep the Airpods Pro in the test environment of our leaderboard among the best-sounding in-ear headphones, although we would still prefer the Sony XM3 here.
The battery life is also excellent – but not quite at the top level of the best models on the market. With one charge, the Airpods Pro lasts almost 5.5 hours without using ANC (on an Android phone), including recharging in the carrying case, you can expect a runtime of just over 27 hours. With activated ANC, the runtime hardly differs. If you only have 15 minutes to charge the completely empty earphones, you get a very good remaining life of just over 2.5 hours. The total charging time of 2.5 hours is also okay. The Airpods Pro thus has excellent battery life and are well equipped for almost all everyday situations.
Excellent features
In addition to active noise suppression, the Airpods Pro also offers many other comfort features that we like: On the one hand, the button control works pretty well. At the bottom of the footbridge, there is a very small button that you can use to control transparency mode, noise reduction, play/pause, and track change. Unfortunately, there is no volume control, you have to talk to Siri or try to use your smartphone. Incidentally, Siri always listens and is thereafter a shout. As usual, the Airpods switch on automatically when you take them out of the transport/charging case. If you put them back, they turn off and charge.
The handy case (which is slightly larger than that of normal Airpods) holds it magnetically. You can also power the case wirelessly with a Qi charger. As mentioned above, there is a transparency mode, and iPhone users can look forward to wearing recognition. The Airpods Pro are also suitable for sporting activities as they are protected against splash water in accordance with the IP standard 4X. There is no NFC, for iOS users, but it is not a loss, since they can pair the Airpods Pro very quickly and conveniently with an iPhone next to it.
