Scope of delivery
The MW65 package is manageable. In addition to the headphones themselves and a mini jack replacement cable, there is no jack adapter included, but a USB-C charging cable including a USB-A adapter and an airplane adapter is also on board. A carrying case with a snap closure in an interesting design complements the scope of delivery. That’s about it: short and painless. Because what makes this headphone model is more in it than in its accessories.
Design & processing
The color of the MW65 is available in the metal/leather combinations silver / brown and gunmetal/black. While the ear cups of the latter two variants lined with black fabric, the special edition “Kevin Durant / Studio 35” inside the earcups comes with a striking orange-colored textile and otherwise in silver/gray. The US basketball star Kevin Durant had previously bought into Master & Dynamic and is now presenting his first “own” headphone model with a variant of the MW65.
The materials and workmanship of the headphones are of the usual Master & Dynamic quality, which means excellent. Leather and anodized aluminum are the materials of choice here. The exchangeable ear cushions of the headphones are surrounded by soft lamb leather and made of memory foam on the inside. The headband is also covered with double-stitched lamb leather. The aluminum components ensure durability and robustness without raising the weight of the handset. Another argument in favor of its quality is that all cables are covered with fabric and very flexible. In addition, sufficient kink protection is installed and the audio plug of the supply line is gold-plated.
Technology
With its technical values, the MW65 is in the middle of the competition. The 40 mm beryllium drivers are designed to provide a particularly full, warm, and distortion-free sound with low weight and high rigidity. Their frequency range covers the typical human hearing range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The impedance of 34.7 ohms we measured makes it sound loud enough even on smartphones and tablets. The maximum sound pressure level of 100.32 dB SPL does not pull out any trees but is sufficiently loud for powerful sound reinforcement on the go. The Master & Dynamic MW65 has a firm but not too strong contact pressure. But this is not necessary either, because the weight of the headphones is just 249 grams without the cable.
A microphone array is built into the headphones, which feeds the active noise cancellation with ambient noise. The technology behind the noise-canceling feature comes from our own company. The manufacturer wants to ensure that the basic sound of the device does not change significantly when noise cancellation is activated. M&D has opted for two-stage noise suppression with different strengths/efficiencies. If the NC function is switched off, the passive noise suppression due to the design comes into play. At the lower level (“low power”), only quiet noises, such as light wind, are filtered out. Only at a high level (“high power”) does the integrated technology suppress louder noises, such as aircraft and machine noise, loud street noise, and so on.
Functions & handling
The MW65 hearing cups can be rotated, tilted, and swiveled. Accordingly, the adaptation to the shape of the head is good. This also applies to the size adjustment of the headband. As a small disadvantage, I find that it is not rasterized. When you put on the headphones, you notice how small the earcups are. This is undoubtedly an advantage for the transport and storage of the MW65. However, if you have big ears, the ear-covering should be more like an on-ear headphone.
Except for the call acceptance button, all controls are attached to the hearing cups so that they are “behind” when you wear the headphones. This ensures a clear design line in the front view and simplifies the operation of the buttons and sliders with your thumb. The technical handling in terms of Bluetooth is child’s play. Also because acoustic feedback ensures certainty. However, the position of the info LEDs is not quite as successful. They are covered by the thumb when it starts pairing. The button for selecting the desired ANC mode is on the side. If it is pressed, the active noise suppression starts at the highest level and can be reduced or switched off by pressing the button again. This operation is understandable and intuitive.
Sound character & areas of application
With cables, the sound of the headphones is first class. The first time you listen, the heights are detailed and open, but still gentle. Voice signals from vocals and speech also convince with their presence, without the listening pleasure being impaired by sharp sound. Despite their good presence, the mids are always pleasant. The MW65’s playback sound never saws even with hard guitar music. Overall, the sound of these headphones corresponds to the typical playback signature of Master & Dynamic headphones. This also means that the bass range is more “tastefully”. As the listener, I even get the impression of a gentle roll-off towards the lower end. Excellent dynamics with pronounced transients,
The acoustic isolation from the outside is excellent. The neighbor in the subway are not bothered by their own taste in music, even at high playback volumes. The same applies to the attenuation of outside noise. It is not as strong as headphones with comparatively solid construction and heavy ear cushions. For travel headphones, however, the sound shielding has been successful throughout. I was also impressed by the active noise suppression, both at a lower level when eliminating the whirring of a PC or at a high level when sound-absorbing street noise.
