Manageable – timeless – easy to service
The scope of delivery of the HD 600 is manageable. In addition to the headphones themselves, all that is required is a cable with a stereo mini-jack plug and an adapter, and an instruction manual.
The redesigned shape and black-gray coloring of the headphones underline the clear design line, the oval of the over-ear shells of the HD 600 is anatomically adapted, and the ear pads can be changed. On the back of the open earcups, metal grids open the way for incoming sound waves.
The approximately 3 m long interchangeable cable is made of low-oxygen copper, surrounded by a Kevlar fiber jacket. Symmetrical cables are also available as optional accessories, optionally with XLR or 4.4 mm jack plugs. If the headband pad wears out, it can be replaced by Sennheiser service, so that no new headphones are required.
New & tried and tested
From a technical point of view, Sennheiser made no changes to the HD 600 model from 2019, so it is identical to its predecessor. And so the headphones with a transmission range from 12 Hz to 40.5 kHz (manufacturer’s specification) are still really well positioned today. Its impedance of 306.85 ohms (averaged), which characterizes it as real hi-fi headphones, predestines it for use with headphone amps with the corresponding power. Fired accordingly, the headphones emit a maximum sound pressure level of not too high 93.1 dB SPL.
Comfort meets naturalness
The size adjustment of the headband is rasterized so that the size once set is retained even after being removed. The pressure of the approx. 250 g light headphones without cables are medium. Soft velour ear cushions on the swiveling and swiveling hearing cups, fabric-covered headband padding, and medium pressure make the seat of the HD 600 comfortable. Only unplugging and plugging in the replacement cable requires an unfortunate combination of effort and sensitivity. The included adapter was screwed on so that it was guaranteed not to remain in the headphone amplifier when the cable was removed.
Sennheiser promises an undyed sound that should convey spatiality and naturalness and I, too, was immediately impressed by the openness of its spatial impression. Starting with the stereo impression, through the good depth grading, to the appealingly detailed resolution of the audio signal, the Sennheiser model convinces me. This is mainly due to its combination of fine, airy heights and not too unobtrusive mids. Nevertheless, due to this sound pattern with guitar-heavy music, such as rock and metal, caution should be exercised against rapid fatigue of the hearing.
In the bass range, the HD 600 is subtle but still well-positioned. Here it offers large reserves that can use by switching on the bass boost or equalizer. Then these over-ears reproduce even the deepest sub-bass loudly and without distortion up to high volume ranges. At the other end of the frequency spectrum, the super high-frequency reproduction can easily push to the extreme.
