Sennheiser HD 650 Black Friday Review 2023
Workmanship and comfort
Sennheiser uses plastic to manufacture most of the parts, but this leaves a high-quality impression. Metal can only be found in the temple and in the grilles of the ear cups. Individual parts are replaced relatively easily in the event of a defect since they are only inserted into one another. The cable sockets grip firmly and securely, and the cable itself is very flexible.
The termination in a large blade connector may no longer seem up-to-date but makes sense for the intended purpose. The same applies to the over 300-ohm impedance. With a weight of just under 270 g, the HD is not too heavy, but the bracket creates a fairly high contact pressure at the beginning. The HD 650 can still be considered “comfortable”, although you can never hide it on your head. The listener is open in both directions,
Sound
The sound of the HD 650 is legendary, as it shaped the sound of an entire generation of listeners. This sound can best describe as “warm” and “intimate”: Gentle, finely resolved highs complemented by warm mid-tones. These are created by the present, slightly emphasized basic tone and the lowered mids. The presentation of voices and instruments is physical and colorful, without sliding too much into the warm. A successful vote, if not entirely neutral, but still credible.
The basses do not emphasize the upper bass in favor of a real presentation, but the HD 650 runs out of steam in the deep bass. The warm presentation ensures that the events on the virtual stage are presented relatively close. A little airiness is missing in the sound. For this, the positions and contours of the actors are very clearly outlined. Music pieces with small instrumentation and acoustic instruments can benefit from this. For modern genres, younger listeners, in particular, might miss a hint of aggressiveness in the sound – the HD 650 has a tendency to make the process a little soft.
Refined technology
The transducers of the HD-650 headphones, which are based on neodymium magnets, are fine-adjusted by hand at the factory. Also in this model, new membranes are now installed, which should be powerful and allow a low distortion factor of less than 0.05%.
The other specifications of the HD 650 are identical to its predecessor. This affects the impedance of around 300 ohms and also the audio transmission range from 10 Hz to 41.5 kHz (manufacturer’s specification), which is, therefore, lower and higher than that of the HD 600. In addition, according to the manufacturer, the HD 650 also offers a sound pressure level of 103 dB SPL, which is 6 dB SPL higher, but our measurements could not prove this. Here, the titanium-colored headphones only achieve just under 94 dB SPL.
