First encounter

Matt black plastic, memory foam, and some metal are the materials from which TaoTronics builds the TT-BH085. That makes for a very good feel – the headphones don’t look cheap, even if they only weigh 230 grams on the letter scale thanks to this mix of materials.

Nowhere does anything crunch and crease, regardless of whether you fold the construction to a minimum size or adjust the grid size of the bracket to which the driver housing is attached by means of a U-shaped holder, smoothly and quite precisely to its head dimensions. The soft padding around the ear cups presses gently but determines the first external noises, which makes you sweat a little, especially in summer. In addition to the TT-BH085, TaoTronics also supplies USB-A to USB-C cable and a mini jack cable for the current operation,

The dynamic 40 mm drivers get their signal via Bluetooth 5.0, which encodes with aptX or AAC, whereby the 750 mAh battery lasts 40 hours without and 25 hours with ANC.

Pairing works smoothly, but multipoint is not supported. If the battery is empty, you can refill it via the USB-C socket in about 45 minutes or charge it for two more hours within five minutes. And if you have no power at all, the good old jack cable helps unpretentiously – as long as the player has a 3.5 mm jack socket.

However, the convenience of a remote has to be foregone. This works in normal operation via Bluetooth with three buttons on the right driver housing as far as normal: start/stop, telephone, volume up / down, skip forward / back. The switch for active noise suppression is located on the left housing. A protection class – of whatever type – is not specified, so it is better to keep the TT-BH085 away from a lot of dirt and rain.

Sound

The headphones deliver a satisfactory sound, which is shown voluminously and differentiated; even if the basses push themselves into the foreground a little uncomfortably, the mids don’t emit too much heat and the heights thus appear a bit too cold. The basses lack the very low frequencies that make the head shake so comfortably when the music really rumbles. The mids make voices and guitars appear a bit pale and due to this missing transition from low to high; the sound does not want to fan out as much as one knows and appreciates from the expensive competitors.

If you now switch on the ANC, the sound changes to a bit more mids and a little less treble. A slight diving bell effect sets in, and low frequencies and uniform noises; such as the rumble of the tram, are quite effectively minimized, with the sharp typing noises still penetrating the keyboard. And a slight background noise is added to everything by the active microphones. So far the character of the suppression corresponds to what can be expected from the feedback ANC technology. Due to the microphones installed inside the earpiece, high interference frequencies are canceled out worse than lower ones. The better hybrid noise-canceling technology that uses microphones both outside and inside the earpiece to widen the signal cancellation,

All in all, the ANC of the TT-BH085 does not really make the sound better, nor does it make it dramatically worse; although there is a certain isolation effect. The power consumption when the ANC is switched on is of course significantly higher and the runtime is reduced by almost half.

In contrast, the voice quality via the built-in microphones with CVC 8.0 noise reduction during phone calls is good.
